BMW M Mode button - why do I have to scroll?
I just got my M2, and I couldn't be happier! However, I've noticed that pressing the "M Mode" button on the center console doesn't automatically put the car in "Sport" mode. I have to scroll to "Sport" then select it. Is there a work-around to this? Am I missing some setting?
In my G82 with iDrive7, pressing the button toggled between "Road" and "Sport", and holding it down put in in "Track" mode. It makes sense since there are only 2 real mode you touch regularly, so having to scroll seems pointless. Why did they change this?

Congrats on the car! Lets get those mods going!
Also, if you're talking about the Sport Display?

I believe you are able to program the sports display to the m buttons with canDO plus? Have gotten used to changing it when I am waiting for the revs to drop after starting up so I haven’t bothered yet…

Welcome to the hassle that is iDrive 8/8.5 (whichever you have). Everything that used to be done with 1 button push in iDrive 7 now requires multiple steps.

![]() don't discount track days unless you have tried'em! ![]() Meh. I have slept through more than a few C&C's. Painful. Performance cars were made to be driven, not looked at. I am a guy who took my pristine, museum quality, 40k mile, original paint, E30 M3 to the track, regularly. why? because it was what it was designed and built to do. we all have our motivations in this hobby! ![]() |

I do 8 to 10 track days a year. You have to be prepared to pay the price for them. Tyres, brakes, maintenance and more frequent replacement of components together with fuel and track fees will cost about CAD$1500 / USD$1000 per track day for a G87.
Debris and stone damage and some mechanical failures and the risk of damage from an off-track incident also have to be factored in. Dropped a valve at 7000RPM in my Caterham in 2023 that required a full engine rebuild due to inlet valve spring fatigue with 10,000km flat-out track use, but also presented the opportunity for a refresh and power upgrade. |

"I've looked at clouds from both sides now .."
Track days (better yet, well-run driving schools) are invaluable for learning how to operate a performance car near/at its limits. There's no better or safer way to exert the most performance from such a car. I did a dozen track weekends (as an instructor or student, depending on the track) in a single Midwest season before walking away from it. Track days can be costly on consumables such as tires and brakes. Add in track insurance, event fees, fuel and lodging; and USD$1,000 per track day sounds about right. And while the controlled environment of a track has its advantages for performance driving, it has its drawbacks -- the scenery never changes. These days I'd rather dial it back a couple tenths and enjoy a spirited drive on an early Sunday morning on some favorite local roads. Not much of a C&C enthusiast, but I appreciate there's an outlet and a tribe for everyone. |

![]() You can do both without taking it to the extreme. I have done 1 HPDE event each year since 2007. About $400 per event. Anyone who thinks "spirited" driving on public roads is anything like driving on a racetrack is fooling themself.

![]() I also don't really care about cars & coffee, but do bring my vehicles to one by my home every once in a while. It's hosted by a family-owned business, and they're usually accepting donations for local charities, hosting a toy drive, etc. I avoid the pretentious ones where you have to pay to attend, reserve a spot in some Park Upfront app, etc. ![]()

I don't understand all the hate. If people want to mod a car to be fast on the street then let them. If they want to go on the track that's cool too.
Why are we always so fixated on what a car should or shouldn't be and can't let people be themselves? If I had the money I'd have a dedicated track car. Maybe one day I'll but a Cayman 4.0 and RS5 and then the M2 will turn into the track car. |

I don't think it's hate, I think it's more a matter of someone saying unilaterally what is right/wrong or good/bad (and yes, people get defensive). Of people want to track their car, that's great (I am a NASCAR fan but not a track driver). Over the years I have run many cars down Gainesville Raceway and even have a winning trophy to show for it. That is my preference (as opposed to track) and that's how I prefer to have my car set up. People should be able to accept whether their cars are stock, modded for track, modded for drag racing, or even trailer queens/show cars. It's each person's passion and no right or wrong about it. It's the same crap when the 6MT people bash the 8AT people. We all bought the car we did for a reason... |

![]() To be clear, my G87 is a daily driver. That's its main purpose. Once a year, I'll do a casual HPDE track day to get the need-for-speed out of my system. I'm not chasing lap times. I just go to put the pedal to the floor for a couple hours. I understand it's not for everyone, so no hate towards anyone who doesn't want to do it. And maybe once or twice a year I'll go to a Cars & Coffee or Cruise night to hang out with other enthusiasts. Both track days and cars & coffee meets are cool with me.
