Any info appreciated regarding retrofitting

Hi guys,

Although I have a M240i from 2023, I wanted to create this topic since I assume the ACC/HUD might be the same for both cars and there is more people here.

What I want to do is find a good professional shop to cut into the current dashboard and retrofit the HUD and ACC if possible. These are my findings (so far):

HUD:
The HUD needs a new dashboard and windshield however the windshield will be changed with warranty (with HUD version) and the dashboard can be cut. The HUD can be purchased for 300+ euros online undamaged. I don't know about the cable and coding it in. Maybe this is very doable?

- 51-45-9-460-930 (trim panel hud)
- 51-48-9-621-868 (insulating cover)
- 62-30-8-782-163 (HUD, 2.hand much cheaper)
- 51-31-8-494-709 (windshield with hud, will be replaced under warranty anyway)
- ‎Cable?
- Cutting dashboard
- Coding

ACC:
I think the camera and radar are the same for models with and without ACC. However, a shop in Germany said that BMW doesn't deliver the activation codes for this to be possible. No idea what this means. Perhaps the ECU is encrypted and it's needed for the coding? Same deal for the HUD then?

M2/LCI steering(with ACC/Heating):
- Buy wheel, install, code done?

Any info is appreciated regarding retrofitting these. I just want to know if it's possible(digitally, physically). For example, changing out the dashboard(for some reason) or the iDrive screens(port incompatilibity) is a dealbreaker for me financially. I'll settle with the M2 steering with heating element and call it a day but I feel like it's very doable..

The BMW dealers in The Netherlands and Germany aren't keen to give any information regarding this. They also refuse to give any partnumber or technical diagrams in general which was a bummer.

While you can add HUD; wouldn't it be less trouble to order a new car and sell the current one?

ACC is near impossible to add after the fact.

Trade the car

Selling-buying/trading a car is way more expensive and there is literally only 2 m240i 2023+ in the entire country being sold by BMW atm.

Why is ACC near impossible to add after? Sensor and camera is the same. What else is there?

I believe this was the case for the pre 2023 models. What is your source for the 2023+ models if you dont mind me asking because this could be a dealbreaker for me for the HUD.

The sensor for ACC is not the same.
But let's assume it is; you will also need the software installed and calibrared.

Where are you going to get the software?

Also I didn't say get a 2023 as a replacement. Buying a new one with the features you want is ideal. By the time you are done, assuming it can be done, you will be on your way to buying a car with the time and money.

Replacement is going to be way too expensive for me to justify it. I would justify retrofitting because (I think) it’s not that expensive. Windshield under warranty, second hand HUD for like 350euros. A different headunit is like 400euros(if this really needs changing). Cable, bracket, seals and coding costs nothing. Changing a car is going cost 5k+ minimum and that is if I can find one I like.

I found two places, one that can provide the coding for both HUD and ACC. One says they can’t for the ACC(something about activation codes)

Update: Bimmer-tech mailed me back saying they offer parts service(send me a list of parts and the numbers needed) for 149usd per retrofit and 299usd for retrofit coding. 149usd for a shoppinglist seems strange but it is an option

Nothing changed.. headunits that were installed at productionplant will have only opted options installed

PS: if you ever hav electrical problems an need a new software on your car .. bmw dealership wont and cant help you ... workshopsystem only works if retrofit was done by bmw ( and is availiable from bmw), wich is a no for both planned retrofittings..

BMW doesn't offer any type of retrofit. Not even the ACC. If there is a chip shortage, or you don't offer the most basic features standard, even on a m240i from 2023, let the people source the parts and make these retrofits possible.
