Friendly reminder to not delay getting aftermarket grills to protect the unacceptably exposed radiators on your G87
Don't be like me. I kept putting off buying them and just when I hit 1200 miles and was done with my break-in, a rock hit the main radiator and perforated it. All of the coolant leaked out, repair cost was $5k, and was without my car for a week. Highly recommended especially if you live in Texas. I've never seen a place with more rocks and road debris.

![]() Things like this make me sometimes question the forces at play driving BMW engineering and decision making. How can you view the front end openings and not say "Wow, those are really exposed"? I'd love to exist in the pristine environment they seem to live in, but most of us have to deal with the real world and all the crap that pops up in our path. I'd consider screens but then I'd be bothered about not being able to clean the slats and supports behind them without having to remove screens. Would prefer something that mounts from behind so they didn't block those, but do realize that installing from the front is a much easier proposition. |

Protective Grill
They are easy to install and I did it myself. They look good. They come from England but can be ordered on Amazon. There are grills for the front and one for the oil cooler underneath. I jacked up the car to put on the oil cooler. You just need simple, hand tools, and a couple of bolts. I use the high-speed hand sprayer at the car wash to get the bugs out of the grills. No issues at all after 3600 miles.

I don't know why so many on here feel they need to wait until the break-in service before adding anything to the car (screens or otherwise). Screens (in this case) have absolutely nothing to do with anything the dealer is going look at during your break-in service.
OP - sorry this happened & yes TX roads suck, especially for a state that boasts having so much $$. |

Mine is a manual and it does have a flimsy plastic grill in front of the radiator. IT IS NOT ENOUGH. The rock hit that "protector" and one of the fins on it "sacrificed" itself to deflect the hit but the radiator was still hit. I saw it and thought it was fine because I couldn't see the hole, but the dealership found it.
