Elusive Rattle

Does anyone else have an elusive rattle somewhere in the cockpit that is driving them mad? Driving on some roads that aren’t perfectly smooth, I’m noticing some sort of rattle that seems to be coming from the cup holder area - like something is loose. The passenger says it sounds like it’s coming from the back. When I position my head in the middle of the car, it sounds like it’s coming from in front of the drivers door. Can’t find the source to correct it and it’s making me go MAD! I’m going to get into an accident soon because I’m looking all over inside the car instead of looking at the road. Sort of kidding, sort of not.
Anyone else?

Despite the post above, there actually has been some pists/a thread regarding this. I dont recall the thread and dont recall if its in the G87 forum or G42 forum but since the interiors are the same, it wouldn't matter which forum its in. Do some searching and you should be able to find it.

remember too that if no one reports these rattles to the dealer, BMW won't work on fixing the designs.

Quick story: years ago my pal and me both bought 911s. He got a 2005 997.1 and I bought a 2009 997.2. His rattled like a mother. He brought it to the dealer and they said they could do the whole "rattle kit" of improvements made on the 997.2. So he paid the $800 and viola, rattles all gone. Porsche nailed every one on the redesign. The dealer showed all the foam-wrapped wires and new pieces of rattle tape that they specified on the .2 model. Without complaining, nothing like this would have happened, and U know, Porsche folk love to complain! haha!

I had a rattle on the trunk lid that I fixed, haven’t gone down the path of chasing front interior ones though.

I get the center console one and also one that sounds like it’s coming from the passenger door.

hah that was from me, i spent good amount of time looking for rattles and creaks, do you by chance have a video of yours? One of mine was a rattle in seatbelt lock but it sounded like it comes from the front, it was weird. I have also insulated a bit the cup holder sliding cover, which was creaking on uneven roads.

Oh Man, I’m an idiot! Problem solved. It was a garage door opener that was sitting on the visor right above my head. So glad I didn’t waste the dealers time with this. They would have put me on the shit list.

Do you have a garage door opener on the visor? If so, throw it out the window and see it that fixes it. Can’t believe that was it. I was chasing that for a week. Programmed Homelink and took it out of the car.

All the more reason to program the mirror buttons and ditch the remote

We once spent almost a year hunting a rattle in my wife's car. Even the techs would come for a ride and exclaim, "I hear it! I hear it!" and once they got the car it went away and they could not locate it.

Come to find out, it was her wristwatch rattling when she was holding the top of the steering wheel. It never struck us that no one ever heard the rattle other than when she was driving....I never told the dealer that. My shame is real!

I have the same issue with the rotating bezel on my watch, the spring has broken, so it rattles quite a bit. I thought it was the car initially until I realised that when I took my hand off the wheel, the rattling stopped.

For someone future reference, I found my creak/rattle culprit. Sounds like pen-tip creaking from passenger seat, pillar area. It was the passenger side underneath tip for that yellow thingy:

Driver side surprisingly it was already felt taped from factory lol. Once I taped that up, my car was dead silent finally. (Well, apart from the common cup holder rattle lol)

On a related note before I bought a 2003 996 Turbo I had the Carfax report (courtesy of the selling Porsche dealer). Lots of early entries for rattles/noises. A number of references to felt strips being used to quiet the car.

I bought the car 6 years old with less than 10K miles. The car was quiet. No rattles/noises. But for the first owner must have been a nightmare.

I’ve had to do the felt strip thing on a few new cars, with varying degrees of success. Super annoying to do on a new car.
