Porsche 911 Carrera S (7MT) or BMW M4 (MT)
Hi,
A new porsche 911 Carrera S with the options I want will be around 153K prior to discount and tax (lease rate is 7.3%) A new BMW M4 might be in the 90K range with most options with a lease rate around 5.9%. Since I'm talking about Canadian market, the MSRP will be higher compared to USA counterpart. I've always wanted a M3 (M4) and do European delivery; but now I've seen the new BMW coming out (X5/435i/M6/M5), the excitement is less than before. Maybe I'm getting older. As for SUV, range rover sport seems a more refined car. As for coupe, porsche 911 carrera s and the upcoming mercedes S series coupe are excellent. GT3 is better, but no MT. Now after hard work, I'll be able to afford either car, and I know you can do European Delivery in the above brands mentioned. If you only choose one car (2 door coupe), which one will you choose? Thanks |

Apples to oranges comparison. The 911 is a two seater. After 4 911's, I can tell you the backseat is useless. For the 150k price range, I would spend another 20k and likely consider the Audi R8 with a V10. Just a thought...Since it's much more exclusive than the Porsche. Good luck!

But I do agree, it's not really an apples to apples comparison. But if you want pure driving experience, the Porsche is probably the way to go out of the two mentioned, but it also the more expensive. The M4 may be more practical, slightly. |

We pretty much know nothing about the M4 except what it looks like on the outside. How does it drive? How is the build quality? How fast is it? How much will it cost? What options can be had? what is the weight? How much power? Until we know these things it's impossible to compare on other than looks and brand status.
That said, I would take the 991 if my kids could fit a bit more comfortably. I might still get it, I always wanted a 911 and now I can afford one even if it's a slight stretch. BMW has IMO a lot to prove with the F8X if they want to remain a choice for enthusiasts. The direction they've taken with their recent cars is concerning and disappointing at best. If you want sporting practicality the M3.....there is no comparison between the 911 and the M4, different segments, different propositions entirely. One is a sports car and one is a GT coupe.

Too many unknowns here. The 911 (or even new Cayman S) is obviously the better pure driver's car, but the M3 (and assuming the M4) is an all-arounder if you don't have a 3-car garage filled.

I never understand the statement apples to oranges.
I mean the only way to get apple to apple would be comparing a m3/4 with another m3/4. otherwise it's always apples to oranges to someone. for example, many consider the 911 a sports car and m3/4 a GT car. I don't know.

M3 would be C63, RS4/5, Lexus IS F, etc. In other words, cars that are targetted at the same market segment. Last edited by paddy335; 09-18-2013 at 07:04 PM.. Reason: Additional information |

Good point, he made no mention of practicality. My main point being if you can afford either a 911 or an M4 and are happy with the compromises of a 2 door car I don't know any reason why you would not choose the 911. It's the benchmark car from whatever perspective you choose to review it.

I had the same thought process as you m4medic. I've had 2 Porsches in the last 8 years (06 Boxster S, 2009 Carrera). In July I ended up ordering a 2014 Carrera S with 7spd manual - it's an October allocation.
For perspective, we have an 13 f30 328 which I absolutely love- fantastic car ; my wife drives it mainly. For me it is absolutely no contest- the 911S especially the new generation 991 is in another league. It is the benchmark pure sports car. No other pure sports car offers what it can in a 2+2 package. (Okay there is the GTR but its not everyone's cup of tea). I used my 09 911 daily for 4 years and it was very practical for me. My 5 year old son fits comfortably in a booster in the back seat. I had winter tires on it and was excellent in the winters. 4 years and 98,000km with no issues. It was a base 911 and was not that much more than a fully loaded M3 at the time factoring the discount I got on it during the height of the financial crisis. Put a smile on my face everyday for 4 years! By the way, a Carrera S starts at $112,800 in Canada. You really don't need to add almost 40k of options in it!! I would say if you can afford both, definitely go for the Carrera S. You only live once and I know I would have regretted not pulling the trigger on the 911. The manual transmission with the sport chrono option now has the auto rev matched downshifts in sport plus mode. Motor trends best drivers car for 2012 (S) and 2013 (4S). I know the M4 will be a fantastic car and as far as value for money it is definitely the better deal from a financial point of view. If you can afford either, get a lightly optioned Carrera S (pick the performance options and skip the useless options that make Porsche the most profitable car company) and the smile on your face every time you get in the car and start the engine will be worth the price of admission. .

Thanks for the info. Porsche usually has higher residual value at the end of the lease. I'm not sure how much discount I could get from a newly released m4. I'm suspecting lots of people are putting deposit down for an allocation.
My configured 911 is the same price of a fully loaded m6 in Canada. |

You are asking on a BMW forum whether to get a BMW or a Porsche, which is at a much, much higher msrp...and some are still recommending the Porsche. The M4 was also my dream car, but after seeing 435i msport, seeing the m4 reveal was a bit anticlimactic.
If you post this question on rennlist or 6speed, I wonder what responses you will get. On rennlist they will tell you to get the Porsche hands down and that there is no comparison. On 6speed they will tell you never to settle and to get the GT3 |

Yes, the residual will be higher but more importantly the real market value will be significantly higher than the lease residual (in case you want to buy out your lease at the end).

Buy both the M4 and Cayman S instead of a 911 S and va la, problem solved.
Or better even, buy the new M3 sedan and Cayman S. Perfect garage combo imho. If you don't have space in your garage buy a new house too

Leasing for porsche carrera S at my options will be $3300 with tax included while the M4 will be around $1800 with tax included (have asked a few sales, none of them will give any discount).
