Motortrend 2023 M2 First Test Review: "We Knew It Would Be Good … But *This* Good?"

"2023 BMW M2 First Test: We Knew It Would Be Good … But *This* Good?"

"Even this base model outperforms all previous M2 variants, including the M2 Competition and CS."

https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2...t-test-review/

I'm not having buyer's remorse (my M4 X-Drive is in for its 1200 mile service today), because I need AWD, but the G87 seems to be twice the car that my 2017 M2. I did not like the M2 that much and dumped it before the warranty ran out.

certainly bodes well for the car. Motor Trend tends not to be "in the pocket" of manufacturers as C&D tend to be.

You know every new model of every car outperforms the last . Just like the new iPhones outperform the last .

Motor trend has an article I’m sure saying how good the m2cs is over the M2C . I’m sure there is also an article that says the M2C is better then the previous m2.

There will be future articles saying how the new M2C or m2cs will outperform this as well ….

definitely a strong performance. especially considering the spec of their test car (sunroof, standard seats, weighing 3800+). Most of the test results were kind of close (1/4 mile, braking, figure 8). Not sure why BMW didn't send a car with buckets and cf roof?

For the guy who wanted an objective comparison between the G87 and the F87 CS, here it is.

Controversial opinion - unless you’re a diehard manual transmission person, get your G87 in automatic. So much fun.

How times have changed. MT is great these days, but keep in mind that in 1974 they named the Mustang II as the car of the year. My buddy and I referred to it a Ford Trend for years after.

This article doesn't really help me. It just says the new one is better than the old one in terms of performance. We all know that.

Not controversial, this has been the common wisdom for at least 10 years now.

Amazingly, a lot of people refused to believe that. There are people who think the BASE F87 (not even the Comp) can keep up with the G87. Or that the G87 is far inferior to the Comp. Hopefully this puts the nail in the coffin of those arguments.

I admit I'm surprised the G87 out skid-padded the CS, especially with the difference in tires (Cup2 vs PS4S) and weight. I frankly expected the CS to still hold the advantage in tests like skid pad and 0-30.

This has been said before, but DAMN does the G87 carry its weight well.

Amazing review - I liked it that they compared it straight to a 7-speed DCT CS.

The only slight disappointment was the weight difference of 321lbs.

But lets put it in context a bit. They tested the heaviest possible G87 configuration, with steel roof, sun roof, ZF8, standard seats. Vs the lightest possible version of the F87 - CS with carbon brakes.

Equalizing for carbon roof + carbon seats + carbon brakes - weight difference is more like 200lbs. Still a lot, but less dramatic.

They were gaga over better handling, acceleration, braking and ride composure.

Also note how they described the steering: "the superb variable-effort/variable-ratio electric power-steering system" - first time I have seen such praise for BMW's steering since they went electric assist.

I'm stoked. I can't wait to get my M2.

I was agonizing over it - but ordered my M2 with the ZF8. I'll miss my current M6 car for sure, but couldn't leave so much performance and remote start on the table - but mostly, didn't want to worry about roasting the clutch on track.

Hummm no.

The C8 base Corvette does not out perform the C7 Z06. Not even the C7 Grand Sport.

The 992 911 base does not outperform the 991.2 911 GT3 (not even the S, GTS).

We are talking about the new base car outperforming the previous top of the line performance limited production model, that cost nearly twice as much as equipped.

(also the new iPhone 14 does not outperform the iPhone 13 Pro)

I really would love manual too, but plan on using it for a lot of DC traffic. Getting the automatic with carbon roof.

Are you saying an AT is more fun than the MT on this car or just generally?

Having a hard time comprehending how an AT can be more “fun”, I guess.

I've noticed that whenever the G87 is tested with an AT it gets glowing reviews but not when it's got a MT.

I'm MT all the way, but AT can also be fun. You can focus on other parts of driving (hitting apexes, trail braking, etc.), without being distracted by the physical act of rowing gears.

Even without a 3rd pedal, are still tons of nuances and challenges to enjoy while driving.

That is easy to explain. The ZF8 is the best torque converter transmission in the world.

The Getrag manual and it's implementation in the G8x is one of the worst.

P.S. I've only driven the manual G87 - I thought the shifting action was OK, but rubbery and imprecise. But compared to a good manual like the Tremec 6060 in my current car, it was lacking - a lot. Having said that, the manual G87 was still a ton of fun and engaging.
