I can just imagine the dealer laughing and walking way from anyone who does this and then enquires about a warranty problem.

I find these types of mods very interesting but the likelihood of "bricking" my car means that I would never be tempted to even consider it especially since BMW would probably outright deny any claim for anything clearly associated with the mod and could possibly even deny claims for ancillary actions this may cause.

But hey, it isn't my money and if someone can afford to blow US$60K+ by bricking their car for what is basically a computer "skin", then more power to them.

I will be following your feedback on how it works out in the long term.

I seriously doubt the dealer or whomever you bought the software from gave you an insurance policy protecting you in the event that you damage your car.

Sounds like a DIY mod and yes, if you are not an expert on BMW computer systems and cars, the possibility of damaging your car is real. If you can brick a phone or any other electronic device why do you think your car is immune? I have personally seen guys brick their BMW motorcycles doing electronics mods similar to this.

Like I said, it's your money so go for it.

Not trying to be rude but i can obviously tell you’re older , and you probably never coded anything in your car since your scared that changing a theme might brick it lol

I don't think it has anything to do with age. There are a lot of things I would not do to my cars because I want them to be reliable and safe and I want to protect my investment. Now, if I had a weekend toy or track day car, then I would be modifying the h**l out of it - as I have done in the past.

Like I said already, it is your money and I will be interested to see how it works out.

But you are being rude and you’re now showing your immaturity by not respecting the views and opinions of others.

This is a global forum and some dealers will go by the book when it comes to warranty. Keep in mind, there is a difference between mechanical, electrical and software mod and the impact they may have on aspects of the vehicle and on warranty.

No one is saying don’t do this mod. However, we are saying be aware of potential consequences.

I don’t see how ? Anyway i was just trying to show the G42 forums that there is a way now. When G20 LCI came out all we would think about is how to get the M theme on it , G20 forums is full of coding and modifying the car so i thought you guys would appreciate it…

I might bite at this one. Standard non-M ID8 is hideous to me.

Question for you; after doing this theme change, does it allow standard ambient color options instead of all the washed out pastel colors of standard ID8? Or I suppose if you doing all this coding anyway, thats probably a non-issue whether its included or done separately.

So from what I gather, you needed to get a cable and software for coding, and then the person who figured out how to do this will walk you through how to code it by hand? Then after this, it requires a small wiring change to eliminate a trouble code that pops up due to the car missing some piece of M gear that the M theme is otherwise expecting to see, perhaps a sensor for the drift analyzer or something?

So all you need to do is install the part they send you install teamviewer on your windows laptop , than he will code it for you virtually , everything works perfectly even the ambient lights i have the M lights package with the M colors and everything works fine

I gotta sleep on that one. I would feel better about it if I was learning how to do it, so that I could undo it later, or do it over again myself if its overwritten by OTA update or dealer update. Do they blackscreen you so that you cant watch and learn?

It’s just super confusing and you need a file to overwrite, idk for me it’s better to have someone that knows how to flash a car to do it . I did it and it’s the best mod i ever did on my car the normal idrive 8 theme looks funny now to me

Moreover, a DME Unlock of MEVD17.x.x and MG1 series computers enables OBD-based tuning, required for platforms like Bootmod3 (www.Bootmod3.com) and MHD (https://mhdtuning.com) via OBD Port. Bootmod3 and MHD work with this unlock but aren't obligatory for their tunes.

The need for a Femto Unlock stems from all BMW DMEs, shipped since June 2020, having an updated bootloader, which made OBD Flash Tuning with existing protocols impossible. Femto offers a solution with the mail-in Femto Unlock service, enabling OBD Flash Programming."

Basically you remove your DME and ship it to FEMTO in Finland , and they will 'unlock' it.

What is the DME on a BMW?
The DME, or Digital Motor Electronics, is the unit that controls all aspects of your vehicle's electrical operations. Often referred to as an ECU in other cars, the DME (in BMW's parlance) receives electrical signals from the engine and other components to adjust the vehicle's performance accordingly.

lol - Cliff Notes:

You mail your DME (ECU) to Finland so they can unlock it.

Once you get it back , you reinstall, then you use 1 of the couple of companies that offer flash tunes to tune your G42 via remote software app
