iPhone as digital key left me stranded (temporarily)!

I picked up my car yesterday, and have been driving it non-stop today. I have 2 keys & the credit card key of course, but I took only my iPhone today & left everything else at home. Yes, I now know the manual says specifically to take a key with you as well as your phone, but I hadn’t read it at that point. Big mistake.

For those who don’t know, you touch the top of your phone against the door handle to unlock the car, then put it in the charging tray in front of the auto gear lever to start. The car recognises your phone (through nfc I believe), you press the big red button and off you go.

After driving around a bit this morning, I pulled over & switched off to let a passenger out, but when I tried to restart, I got an error message saying key not found. No amount of turning the phone round or over, or taking it out of its case, made any difference. I could still lock the car, so I think it was the reader that was the problem.

In classic computer “turn it off and on again” style, leaving the car locked and walking away for 15 minutes cured it, but it was embarrassing when it wouldn’t start, with a bunch of people in the car.

Just posting for others’ benefit, so they don’t make the same mistake… New technology is great, isn’t it?

Normally I'd say RTFM, but if I had to choose between "you can read the book or you can start driving your M2", I'm choosing to go driving first.

But this is a good PSA. Always, always carry your fob. Yep!

This. I didn’t even want a digital key anyway…

It is kind of absurd that the manual cars get robbed of it.

Tbh it seems a bit pointless if you have to have a physical key on you too, just in case. If I could be 100% sure it would work every time, and I could just carry my phone which is always on me anyway, it’d be great.

You can enable touchless open instead of touching the phone on the door handle.

Makes sense since you left the car off that long the drive readiness system finally shutdown. Like you said, kind of like shutting down a computer and turning it on again. I find it strange that it's unreliable to the point they even tell you to carry your key fob or digital key just in case.

Just one more example of why digital key isn’t ready yet. If I have to carry one as a backup I just as well carry one as a primary method.

I can’t get that to work with only my phone on me. It works with the physical key though.

The M2 manual doesn’t seem to cover it like that video does, so maybe it’s model-specific.

Yep. No NFC, older charger with an awkward clamp, located in a weird place under the arm rest.

I can’t find a list of cars with Digital Key Plus anywhere, but I guess the G87 isn’t on it. I wonder why not, given it’s their latest model.

It's also the cheapest M-division model. That matters more than newness. The M2 is missing lots of things that its upscale siblings have, like individual paint, a la carte carbon parts, 360 camera, performance wheels, and so on.

M2 is the budget M, and the options list is trimmed accordingly.
