F1 2024: Hungarian GP - Hungaroring (July 21)

Hungaroring Budapest

Quote:
Budapest
When was the track built?

Work began on the Hungaroring in 1985, and the track was race-ready just nine months later. The Hungarian government had originally considered reviving the old Nepliget park circuit in Budapest in a bid to host Formula 1 in the country, but in the end decided to create a purpose-built facility instead.
When was its first Grand Prix?

The year was 1986. Nelson Piquet won the first F1 race around the Hungaroring, famously slithering his Williams around the outside of Ayrton Senna’s Lotus to take the lead.
What’s the circuit like?

The lack of straights at the Hungaroring often sees it compared to a karting circuit – and it’s true, the resemblance is uncanny. With several series of corners to string together, teams opt for Monaco levels of downforce, with a well-sorted chassis tending to be rewarded over horsepower given the short straights on offer. It’s a challenge many of the drivers relish, however, with finding a good rhythm key to setting fast lap times.
Why go?

Hungary in July is usually hot hot hot. The good news if you’re at the track, though, is that there’s a water park close by – the Mogyorodi Aquarena vizi szorakoztatopark – which should be a good place to cool off. Away from aqueous activities, the circuit is only 20km from Budapest, putting you close to one of Europe’s most fascinating, storied and lively city centres.
Where is the best place to watch?

The track is built in a natural bowl, a bit like the UK's Brands Hatch. That means that any of the grandstands located on or around the main straight should provide a view of other parts of the track too, giving you more F1 bang for your, er, forint.

So what are your predictions?
Last GP at Silverstone showed that team MERC is still making huge progress and that their can can be really fast in the right (colder) conditions.
I think overall McLaren still has the fastest car, being fast in slow and fast corners, at low and high temperatures, but they showed multiple times now that they still don't have the strategic mindset to convert that speed into consistenly winning races. Will that change?
This is my prediction:

1. NOR
2. VER
3. PIA
4. HAM
5. LEC
6. RUS
7. SAI
8. STR
9. TSU
10.ALO

RB is supposed to be bring an actual big update here, vs the past where non RB people claimed it was a big upgrade but it was simply just minor tweaks.
I think the tweak they made last week seems to have added some performance because they said Max was losing 100 points of downforce, and yet still with a severely compromised car, he was within 2 tenths of pole - who else could manage that but Max?
I feel it's only a matter of time before Mclaren ends up pinning themselves back with an 'upgrade' and Mercedes are getting very cocky for having 2 lucky wins aided by a crash in Austria, weather, and a few other factors at Silverstone. I also don't think their car works as well in the hotter temps which we should be seeing considerably more of.

RB's car, save for maybe 2 or 3 races has not been performing optimally and believe there is significant performance to unlock both in pure pace, but in driver confidence (curb riding). It will be interesting but I expect the pendulum to swing back a bit more in their favor.

Alonso, Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton, Senna, Piquet and a few others. All of them took subpar cars to poles and wins. Numerous times. Verstappen is exceptional but not unique.

Your man (LEW) won Silverstone thanks to the Benz new suspension trick .
The Benz W15 will be extremely fast for the rest of this season ...

The Red Bull RB19 is the 3th fastest car at this moment .
MAX will take his 4th World Title in a row and in 2025 his 5th in a row .

Checo is certainly in poor form at the moment. The excuses just keep coming, hoping he can just start hooking things up like he used to. Can't really come to his defense right now... it's just bad. Curious to see how the testing with Lawson went.

Checo is beyond poor form! It's almost like he's being sabotaged.

Lawson failed , he was too slow in his Silverstone benchmark time ..

As I said last week : Checo will get an evaluation after the Belgian GP , and the situation looks very bad for him .
If Red Bull wants to replace Checo (if necessary) It won't be Lawson.

RIC is done in F1 . So I think they will give Yuki Tsunoda a chance if he is fast enough in the Red Bull benchmark time .

That's where my money is. Verstappen is an exceptional driver. Anyone questioning that is a fool. But there'll be more competition next year. Norris, Piastri and Russell are honing their craft, and their cars getting better. Ferrari will have two excellent drivers, but TBD if the car and the strategies will align. Definitely my money is on Verstappen for 2025. He deserves.

Yuki is not a good fit unless he can become a very polished driver. You're going to combine Max + Red Bull and Yuki's outspoken, no-filter-approach of a personality? Good luck.

We won't know the behind-the-scenes talk but you have to question (from both parties) why you wouldn't or don't want to pair Max with Carlos. The only thing is if you know you have a junior driver you're just waiting to promote.

If they were to ever replace Checo mid season, Horner would choose RIC.

Checo has to score some points before the break...any points. His problem is quali. But even then, his race pace in RB is slower than McLaren, Merc, and Ferrari. The RB dominance can no longer carry his mid tier talent. He use to be quicker and lost some confidence for sure.

I’m one of many that watches all sessions and I must admit that I miss the Sprint weekends. Love to see them go with Sprint races for at least half the weekends in the future!

Nice little video…size difference between the RB1 and the RB20 is really striking!

Definitely mental. Relatively good start to the season and then gets worse as the season goes on.

the fact that RB become so bad and yet they still signed Checo shows that they failed in their signings. they have 3 drivers to fill one spot and none of them is any good (if they were why did they sign Checo)

yet for some reason they still have a HUGE lead in the constructors. other teams are not doing well either.

Ferrari is not doing well also with LEC mixing with the bottom ones lately while SAI is rescuing points for the reds on a car that's maybe been altered too much in a panic, is yes man Fred's reign over and should down to earth and calm Arrivebene return I ask.
