I’m not seeing where to restore from backups. To start I select 2-series/M2 then it loads the control unit list. I’m not seeing Instrument cluster among those to change the fuel reserve warning.

No payment to try. The connection should work with the free version.

Why do you need new equipment? What do you have today?

You need to select the model type you used when previously coding, you should then see what backup/s you can restore. If you start by selecting 2-series/M2 Bimmercode will track it as if it were another car.

I had to buy the cable, a tablet because I didn’t have anything that ran Android, then I got the BT adapter, and the $150 Protools software. Looks like it’s all a big paperweight now.

Can you actually code anything with the free version? And what does the pay version provide that the free doesn’t?

Thanks!

You can't code with the free version, but the paid version is half what you paid for Protools.
You can use the cable and tablet with Bimmercode too, no? Should just be the app, try it out, and if it connects, you can buy it.

Unless it's an iOS only app? I use iPhone, so I don't know.

I did that (used M4) but nothing about backups, so I guess none were created. When I select M2 this is what I get - "Instrument Cluster" is the main thing I see missing.

It makes a backup every time you code. If you have an iPhone you can check if the backups are there by going to Files and then look under "On my iPhone", you should see a folder called BimmerCode with a subfolder Backups.

Also, check out the directions from BimmerCode.

I think I have to start from scratch. I would use the iPhone also. Less flakey. The BT adapter I can’t use and the cable I’m not sure. I think it’s not stable enough on the G series, according to Protools. I think I would go with the cable over the BT for speed and reliability. Bimmerlink is the sister app for diagnostics it looks like. What was nice about Protools is, it did both.

I use an ENET cable with a 9 dollar Ethernet dongle on my iPhone…
It sounds like if you want to use your iPhone all you need is the 9 dollar dongle and BimmerCode.

I think I’ll get the cable they recommend, just in case (along with the dongle). Protools ran a test on the one I was using when it connect and it came back unstable and not suitable for coding. Apparently not all of them work with the Gxx, so that’s why they run the stability test. It appears in their testing, they bricked a few ECU’s because of some cables that didn’t perform. Don’t want to take that chance.

I am interested in coding a couple things but a bit worried about it impacting my warranty. I just wanted to change the audio settings and a few other settings and I’m not sure if it is worth it.

Warranty shouldn’t be affected by changing settings.

I just use an ENET cable and an Ethernet dongle.

I’d recommend the more expensive wifi adapters if you’re thinking of using it for other things (like leaving it plugged in to get dashboards or live data views on your phone).

It won't affect your warranty; they won't even know you made the changes. You're not tuning your car with it or anything like that. These are features and settings from factory that you are tweaking, literally flipping bits on or off. Just don't be that guy that mentions it to anyone at the dealership.

Highly recommend you put together a list of all the changes you intend to make. Reason for that is if you have to bring the car in and they need to update something it's likely all your settings will get put back to factory defaults. Having that list handy will make it far easier to change everything back.

Do you by any chance have a link. I don’t think I need the BT module as I was only planning on using it to code a few things. Sorry to ask, I just know I’ll get the wrong one. I’ll be using IOS app.

Thanks so much for the great advice! Will make sure to keep track of any changes.

My dealer was the one that recommended Bimmercode to me. I used to use E-Sys before.

It's hit or miss; some are cool, and others look for reasons to deny warranty work. Your dealer is one of the good ones but if you don't have a good relationship or are uncertain where they stand it's better to be safe than sorry.
