my car is at the dealer- anything I should know?

So my special order M240i is at the dealer. Anything I should be watching out for? I asked earlier about any BS add-ons and was told they don't do that.

I've watched videos online so I'm watching for red flags and plan to pay cash / wire transfer, so there won't be any financing gimmicks.

Does anyone buy any extended warranty at this point, or wait to see how the car does problem-wise?

I'm not planning to get any prepaid service extensions.

Any thoughts?

Jim

Kind of depends how long you want to keep it are you going to modify it? I would say tell them not to wash it unless you want dealer installed swirls. I also like to peel the blue covering plastic off my interior pieces so usually ask them to leave them in place. Otherwise hopefully weather is good and go enjoy it.

^^^ This 100%. Pick it up untouched. Drive straight to the detailers to get a decontamination, and ceramic coat / PPF then coat.

I would strongly recommend that you NOT buy any extended warranty until you are approaching 4 years/50k miles. BMW's Extended warranties exclude a lot, and they are also quite expensive. On top of that, once I actually read the contract (online), the warranty does not start until after the original BMW warranty ends, but if you decide to sell the car at say 3 years you will have to pay for 3 years of the extended warranty even though it is not yet in force. The actual warranty period and the period you have to pay if you cancel are computed differently- in BMW's favor. If I still have my car at the end of the original warranty I would probably buy a Fidelity Platinum warranty. Much better coverage.

We are Fidelity extended warranty retailers, I just wanted to put my information out here for anyone looking for extended warranty information on their BMW 2-series. You can contact me below, I can provide coverage lengths, pricing, deducible options, as well as an example contract that explains coverage. Repairs accepted at all BMW dealerships or licensed independents in the US/Canada.

You don't say if you are buying out of state or in state.

Bought my 2023 M2 out of state (I live in AR car was in MO). I worked out the price down to the penny and had this in writing. Salesman initially said the dealer *has* to install this and that (tint, door guards, nitrogen filled tires) but I pretty much stated those were deal killers. Salesman relented.

Might add salesman relented after some time with me being on hold. Clearly he was talking with his sales manager. This is important. One must *negotiate* with the sales manager. Only he can say Yes to a deal/offer.

Was asked for a $2500 partial payment -- the dealer's wording and in writing -- so I provided a credit card number.

Oh, was initially told sales tax would be collected. Called department of finance here in AR and was told there was no agreement between AR and MO regarding sales tax collection/forwarding.

Informed the BMW I would *not* be paying sales tax. Was told BMW finance required it on financed cars. But I pointed out I was paying cash: well, a paid for trade in (2022 BMW 230i) and a personal check for the difference. It was agreed no sales tax would be collected.

(Dealers here in AR don't even collect sales tax. It is up to the car buyer to visit the local DFA office with the title (unless car is financed and he has no title) and bill of sale and sales tax is calculated and payment made even before the car can be registered.)

While the car was not at the dealer at the time I negotiated the purchase the only requirement/restriction I put upon the car was no test drives. Was told car being a launch car was not used for test drives was used for showroom eye candy.

Car arrived and after a few days of being on display dealer called me and I drove up (dealer ~200 miles distant) and bought the car and drove it home.

Two post purchase issues...

1) Bill of sale that arrived in the mail along with the manufacturer's title failed to note I had paid for the car in full. When I went to register car registration was held up because it looked like there was a lien on the car. I had to contact the dealer and get a "corrected" bill of sale that showed no balance owed.

2) Some few months after the purchase dealer informed me there had been a security breach at the dealership and all the info I had supplied along with my personal checking account routing number and account number were leaked.

ASAP I opened a new checking account at my bank and transferred all but a few dollars from the compromised account to the new account. At home I changed auto payments/auto deposits from the old account to the new account. After auto payments/auto deposits stopped showing up at the old account and showed up at the new account I closed the old account.

Get everything in writing.

I was completely mislead by the finance manager about what Ultimate Care+ actually includes. I was under the impression it included pads and rotors, which was the whole reason I added that. My dealer is now telling me it doesn't include that, so $800 down the shitter. I'm still unclear on this because the literature says it is included.

I was also mislead about a wheel and tire package on my M240i I bought in 2022. I picked up the wheel and tire package because I live in NY and the roads are terrible. I blew two tires and neither were covered. My mistake was I didn't get anything in writing.

It's all a complete scam. I've decided my warranty is now my wallet and I expect to pay for everything I do to the car. I'll never buy one of those packages again.

Did you sign any payment information (lease payments, etc) before placing the order? I did, and when I was due to collect, they tried to increase the payment due to unfavorable swing in the residual. I told them they need to hold the monthly payment I signed on our contract during the order, with no extras added whatsover and no changes to downpayment, and they did end up holding the price even though they take the loss on the change in residual.

Stick to your guns if you signed anything prior. Don't let them take advantage.

Did you contact BMW USA? I'd file some sort of complaint with BMW USA and see what they do about it. I'd imagine you'd have some favorable result if their publishings say pads and rotors are included.

No. My interactions with BMW N.A. have been less than favorable in the past. Not interested in going through that again like I did with the G42. I can afford brakes and my M2 really has no reason to go back to the dealer other than some kind of recall at this point.

Lesson learned for the next one I buy if I'm so lucky.

Basically tell them you like to wash the car yourself, but if they wash it for you anyways too bad. They'll just sell it to someone else with 5k markup and swirls on the gloss black.

Don't buy any warranties. Just save money on the side.

Test out all the features you paid for before driving off. You don't want to find out your digital key isn't working, or they gave you the wrong tires 4 weeks later.

I suspect the OP is some distance from the dealer by now as he picked up the car 8 months ago….
