Active Autowerk Equal Length vs. Single
I’ve seen only one video with the AA single pipe (posted by Jackie Ding) on a G87 and one with an equal length, but am wondering how different they are in terms of tone, rasp and volume (it’s hard to tell from the videos with differing audio quality). Reading the equal length may be louder and raspier but was getting mixed up by different threads. Anyone heard both or know the key differences? Assuming G8X M3/4 comparison videos would be similar. Thanks!

They both amplify the mid-range sound with a deeper and cleaner tone.
The single midpipe offers the cleanest sound, with a rasp free tone through the RPM, even at high RPM. the equal length has a deeper more aggressive mid-range with a louder higher RPM sound, but can get a bit raspy on high revs. They are both a major improvement over stock; it ultimately is up to the customer to decide which sound they are looking for.

the valves are on the axle back; the midpipe does not affect it in any way

I prefer OE valves to keep the OE functionality if needed. And if you want more control, you can buy the SST controller.

Just watched the Jackie Ding video where he weighs the stock midpipe vs the AA single mid pipe. Insane that it shaves almost 30lbs off from the weight of the car! That’s wild. Replacing the stock muffler with a light weight aftermarket unit would save another 20 or so pounds. Didn’t think making the car louder would also make it lighter!

Just wanted to drop this in here. This is my car with the AA catted DPs, equal length midpipe, and the OEM valved muffler (valves open for the video). Also have the AA carbon tips which are so nice.
https://www.instagram.com/reel/CzOxU...QwaWI3cW9xdjE0 I know it's not what you're asking, but for continuity I'll include the info here. This was on my way home from having the AA valved rear section swapped back to the OEM one. The reason was just the cold start. It was so thunderous, like the precussion was tangible in your chest. Now with the OEM it's still just as loud up top, but when you're just cruising it feels like a luxury car again and less like a racecar. It also doesn't shake my entire apartment building when remote start the car in the morning. Other than the ugly look of the OEM muffler, I think this is the ideal set up. |

I have the AA single mid pipe on both the X3M and M2 paired with the factory axle back. I absolutely love it. Like Mike said, It's a very clean deep sound. How it should've originally come from the factory imo. you wont be disappointed.

Is there any emission testing issue with replacing the mid pipe?

It varies by state, in IL, all they do is hook up to your OBD2 port and check for codes. As long as you have no CEL on, you should be good to go. Also new cars here are not required to get emissions testing until after they are 4 years old.

Similar, in AZ it's not required to do testing until the 5th year from model year. My last car was a MY18 that I bought towards the end of 17, but testing not due until renewal in 2023.
