G87 update to iDrive 8.5

Can you update the iDrive 8.0 in a g87 to iDrive 8.5?

There's no reason we can't get iDrive 8.5 features such as the new climate menu though, BMW should bring these back to 8 and tbh we should complain if they don't.

I actually prefer ID7 on my X7 more than ID8 on my M2 So upgrading is not always good to me.

This was beaten to death when they updated the i4 to 8.5 after a 18 months.

I guarantee no matter how much you scream it isn't going to happen. Take this from an i4 owner on 8.0.

It’s ridiculous to me that BMW wouldn’t make small software changes like this that clearly don’t require the new hardware to cars that are still almost brand new.

That may be so, but I will still scream and so should anybody else that wants it.

BMW only recently removed physical climate controls, and now is the time to give them feedback that support is essential for older versions. If BMW discover that users are ok without these upgrades, they will never do them.

I understand the technical changes that prevent the full 8.5 from going on 8 hardware - that's fine. But they have clearly discovered through user research that a more traditional climate menu is preferred, and have said so in their 8.5 literature. Bringing it to 8 is not difficult and not tied to the new hardware, and considering 8 is still being sold it really should be done.

I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse so I'll shut up in a minute But imagine BMW saying "by popular demand we've added the option of round digital gauges, but only for iDrive 8.5". We shouldn't just accept that.

I'm sure at this point that 8.0 is in maintenance mode and unless there are bugs, you/we won't see updates.

I bet most of the development team is now on 8.5 or 9.

I’d prefer the updates to stop. Something gets screwed up each time and I have to update my lights and other BimmerCode settings. Remember in the 90s when you bought a car and that’s how it was forever?

Take the G87 M2, iDrive 8 and 8.5 run on the same platform, same equipment, pushing 8.5 (already developed and released) over the air, remote update instead of 8, wouldn’t cost BMW anything.

MY25 will get it but MY23-24 G87 don't have the supported hardware requirements.

The point is the hardware isn't the same.
8.0 runs on an Intel Atom platform and 8.5 runs on a Qualcomm ARM platform.

And porting 8.5 to the Atom is not ever going to happen because the underlying OS is different.

What is it about 8.5 that has everyone so spiced? The new home/climate menu? Or just because it’s the latest and greatest?

A new climate menu does not justify the potential loss of Bimmercode, in my eyes. YMMV.

To further your point, coding the anti-glare headlights is more important to me not just than 8.5, but than the 20hp extra too. It's a big deal to me.

PS: Good to see you back.
I like coding the headlights too. I can always tune more HP. The interface suits the car. I don’t need it updated.

the lack of an iconic, analog dash design is the only thing keeping this car at merely "excellent" vs "instant classic" IMHO. i dont want any more updates. i dont want myBMW app. i do NOT want LTE connection.

to misquote Hank Jr, i wish BMW would have pity on a dinosaur

Hopping back in my M Roadster every now and then reminds me just how far from analog these cars are!
