Quick, I need some speeding stats
ugh I hate college haha
I'm writing a speech on speeding and the negatives associated with it. I was wondering if anyone has any quick things like "how much time is saved speeding" etc. thanks in advance sorry for not posting in another section |

Hmmm, sorry...do your own research/homework. At least that's what I urge my own kids to do.

In the age of Google, how can anyone possibly have any trouble researching? Or writing a speech, for that matter?
You'll get better answers from a decent Google search than you will from any of us.

got to the national transportation agencies web site, i forgot what the address is and they have lots of data and reports on this subject. But most recently they have come around and saying most accidents are not causes by speed.

You ask for ANTI-Speeding Propaganda on a BMW Forum? WTF?
How about a speech on Pro ticket writing for the sheep in the left lane going slow? How about a speech espousing the need for increased driver training and skills testing? Maybe Annual retests for those over 65? How about special training for the Moronic Soccer Mom's in the their fuggin SUVs? Those would be useful topics. But finding ways to convince a group of impressionable folks that Speeding is BAD or EVIL is pretty counter productive in a society where the SAFETY Nazi's and "What about the Children" Idiots run rampant and get pathetic laws passed, passing zones eliminated, speed limits reduced. It's lame and sad that we as a society have decided to base our standards on the lowest common denominator... Suckle at the Teat of your Nanny State, wallow around in your false sense of security... Yippa... Sorry Sorry got distracted... Anyway... Try DOT, NHTSA, etc. Contact Your State Troopers, they are full of data. The Internet is your friend.

why don't you figure out the figure yourself.
pick two speeds, for instance 55 and 80 mph. determine the time it takes to do one mile at both these speeds so you have time/mile, and then pick a distance to determine how much time saved going 80 as opposed to 55. google mpg studies between travelling 80 and 55, and factor in cost of gas to determine $/mile for both speeds, then do $/time. you can then pick a distance to determine how much time it took and how much it cost. |

For example, driving 50 mph in a 35 mph zone will not get you 15 miles further every hour because there are bound to be traffic lights. Speeding in areas where there are traffic lights and stop signs saves very, very little time, if any. The iDrive has a stopwatch built in (hit voice and say "stopwatch"). I always recommend people who have a usual commute to work time themselves for a few weeks to get a realistic idea how long your commute usually takes. Then try driving like a bat out of hell on your commute -- you'll see it saves almost no time at all (unless you take a long highway to work!).

C'mon. Time = distance/rate. It's junior high math, not differential equations. I don't blame people for getting in your face about it.
For a more "on topic" answer, the DOT and DMV will say that excessive or unreasonable speed is a factor in X% of all MVC's in order to dissuade sheeple from speeding. I say it's a factor in ALL of them. If cars never moved, they would never collide. If they collided, at least one was moving too fast. Ridiculous logic, but true. Like others have said, speed doesn't cause accidents--people do. People talking on their cell phones, people who don't know where they're going, people who drive recklessly, people who think they own the road and can merge/change lanes/straddle the lines whenever they want, people who don't signal their turns, people who don't know how big their car is, people who are physically too frail to drive, people with poor eyesight, people who don't match the traffic speed, and people who are, in general, frickin' idiots. It's true that speeding saves little time--maybe 60 seconds on a 20 minute commute. I realize that. I've timed it. However, do people really argue that they speed to save time? Really? For me (and probably most of the guys on this board who do it) driving fast is fun. If I'm doing 55 on 6- or 8-lane expressways and 35 through commercial strips, I might as well be driving an Insight.

Here are some very obvious bmw speed statistics:
Human vs bmw cars (in term of speed), human always loose. Human vs bmw cars (in term of colision at any speed ), human always loose.

FWIW, we weren't putting you down in any way. We were (at least I was) simply suggesting that you do your own work. That is what school is for...to learn something. I find it far better to try and find the answer myself first, and if all else fails look for suggestions for other places to find the answer. Not to try and get a quick answer from a open forum where the info provided may be subjective/questionable.

I understand, and I also agree that doing your own research is important. I was just asking if anyone had a sort of national figure on the position. I wasn't looking for someone to write the speech for me and doc it as my own. Non the less its done, and I have to go to class. |

Mind you, this was 12 years ago, but I wrote a research paper in college justifying higher speed limits. I got an "A"

Weren't all Interstate highways designed (grade and bank) for 90 mph traffic or is that urban myth?

it's an example. you can create an example with controlled conditions, such as constant speed for an a to b comparison. the OP can create such an example if he clearly states his conditions. if you tried real world, there's too many noise factors that will make it difficult to get a scientific answer. otherwise, the OP should account for the 2 second delay of the possibility of a stray dog running in front of the car. also for the possible timed street lights that will cause a faster driver to stop, while the slower driver goes right through. |
