Question Contest: How much will the G87 M2 weigh?

We know the G87 is based off the G42, but is not equipped with X-Drive. Here are some stats to help you make an educated guess. These figures are for the NA model M240i X-Drive w/AT.

M240i X-Drive w/AT Curb Weight: 3,871 lbs (it's a real porker)

M240i X-Drive w/AT Weight Distribution: 52.6 / 47.4

BMW's global website shows the upcoming M240i RWD is 55kg (121 lbs) lighter than the X-Drive model.

My guesstimates are as follows...
  • Base G87 MT Curb Weight: 3,742 lbs
  • Base G87 AT Curb Weight: 3,780 lbs
  • Base G87 Weight Distribution: 52.1 / 47.9
What are your guestimates? Winner gets bragging rights, will be featured on the front page of bimmerpost and get an all expense paid trip to ///Mexico!

Yes, the G87 has more bracing, two turbos instead of one dual scroll, more cooling, dual full length exhaust pipes, etc. Just my guess, I could be way off, but I sincerely believe it'll weigh more and maybe even more than my guesstimate.

Put in your guestimate.

Wasn't confirmed somewhere by BMW that the G87 curb weight will be somewhere between the F87 w/ manual (3,561lbs) and the G82 base w/ manual (I've seen it reported as low as 3,690lbs)?

If so, my guess is around 3,595lbs for the manual G87 and 3,633lbs for the auto. Hoping to lose at least another 50-70lbs with carbon fiber roof and seats

2023 M2  [8.33]
Problem with all G series cars is that they share the same CLAR platform. So no matter what, it won't be as light as the F87.
From Car and Driver, the weight of the 230i is 3,554 lbs.
My guess would be somewhere between the 230i and the 240i's 3,871 lbs.
Splitting the difference is 3,713 lbs. I would imagine that would be the lowest possible weight with the carbon roof and seats.
So manual with low weight options: 3,713 lbs.
Auto without any low weight options 3,803 lbs.

It was the M2 and the M4, I mistakenly said the M2CS. In this article, they said the trims mentioned for the weight comparison were that it's heavier than the F87 M2 competition but lighter than the M4 rear wheel drive (doesn't specify base or competition trim) and the M240i xdrive.

"I can't tell you how much it weighs, because BMW wouldn't confirm that, but I did lever out of the engineers that it's heavier than previous M2 but lighter than both the rear-wheel-drive M4 and M240i xDrive"

Can't be that heavy, must be sub 3800lbs for both variants.

3871 M240i - 121 RWD - 21 CF seats - 50 CF roof / no moonroof = 3871 - 192 lbs = 3679 lbs.

Add some weight for wider track, beefier suspension, more rubber and additional bracing. Remove some weight for some steel parts replaced with alu and I think your numbers will be very close.

I would certainly be a very happy man if we're on the money here. I can live with a ~90 pound gain from my previous M2C

$6800 for seats and roof.

CF roof - $3000
Buckets - $3800

Hopefully the G87 is standard no moonroof, that is where the majority of weight savings is anyways.

+more turbos, more intercoolers and piping, plus transmission coolers, etc. The CF roof wont save 50 lbs, the difference between the standard aluminum roof (18 lbs.) and the CF roof (7.5 lbs.) is a measly 10.5 lbs.
Adding up everything else, probably closer to 110 lbs on top of your estimate. I think she will be a porker.

Don’t forget that the M240i comes standard with a huge moonroof. Easily 35-40lbs worth of glass and mechanics.

With an auto perhaps 3750 lbs...

As a point of reference... this is the weight of a 2006 Lexus GS350.

My guess would be more like 25 lbs for the moonroof. Aside from the glass it's just some rails and a small electric motor. Nonetheless it's a good amount of weight to remove from the roof.

Glass is heavy, wouldn't be surprised if there was around a 50lb difference without the moonroof

Yes, the CF roof vs steel and the moonroof delete together should be 50 lbs or more. Here’s a guy weighing the much smaller 135i moonroof at 32 lbs.

Look at the weight of the glass and frame on an F87, roughly 20 lbs.

2' F87 M2 LCI M2 Competition Lift-up-and-slide-back sunroof

Glass cover: 5.118KG / 11.28 lbs

Frame sliding-lifting roof complete: 4.145 kg / 9.14 lbs

Weights on these parts sites are notoriously unreliable. It had the HUD at something like 100 lbs that someone referenced over in the M3 section.
