No. I know where the oil cooler is located. I just didn't know if replacing the oil cooler would pretty much cause all the engine oil to be drained or if it would need to be topped off. Tag answered my question.

Reporting back. I tried to clean the yellow off and it won't come off. Started the car and let it run for a bit but no liquid is leaking. Car is not over heating. Is there a way to check the oil cooler liquid level? A friend said that those look like factory markers as well.
Either way, I will make a service appointment just to make damn sure. |

https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2071670 And I think It sure looks like there is some staining as well. My oil temp is fine, nothing out of the ordinary. I think it's a good idea to have it inspected by your local dealer and if they give it a clean bill of health, simply install the protection and you should be good to go.

the damage looks minor and it’s that’s going to cause it to fail i’m getting the protector. i am already seeing damage to the front radiator from rocks. similar type of damage but i understand that radiator is not as crucial.
my buddy had a zr1 and he bent like 4 rear wheels. there was a class action lawsuit and Chevy lost |

The fin damage at that point is just coincidence. The oil level in the cooler is of no concern. The cooler runs full of oil. If there is an oil leak at the cooler (or anywhere) and the leak severe enough the engine oil level over time would fall. In case of a suspected oil leak I would not wait for the engine oil level system to flag a too low an oil level but would check the oil level periodically -- daily? -- looking for a level that is dropping. But rather than fuss around trying to clean the area, monitor for oil leak sign, check the oil level often for any sign of a level drop, having the car in to have the engine oil cooler checked out for a possible leak is a better plan in this case. |

Going on a tangent but it is relative. Something kicked up off my front tires and hit the back side of my radiator. Looks minor, you say. Well, see the warning I received and pictures of the back side of the radiator. Needless to say, it had to be replaced. Moral of the story, don't mess around with minor issues with certain parts (I would put the oil cooler in this group of parts...its cheaper than the radiator).

when you say backside of the radiator the actual back of the radiator not facing outwards? thought that was completely hidden. i am really shocked at the design and how fragile these pieces are. the front radiator protection options still have larger holes that smaller rocks can pass through. the damages i’m seeing from the post seem small and “minor” thinking it wasn’t a large rock. there should really be a finer mesh/grill like the oem 6mt protection that is included. i might up doing both, something like the zunsport and the oem behind for full protection.

A small 2.5mm diameter hole with 2 bar oil pressure at cruising revs will empty 5 litres in one minute. If the oil level warning detects a low level in the sump immediately, you would have about 40 seconds to shut the engine off before oil stops reaching the bearings. If you receive a low oil pressure warning, if the engine isn’t shut off immediately, it is probably too late to avoid damage. |

Correct, back side facing in/the engine. Only thing we could surmise is it kicked off a tire. Can't see any other way it would have been able to penetrate the back side. |

Mishimoto skid plate!
RGS front grill covers. Do it! 15 minutes worth of work to potentially avoid an engine failure (which BMW will not cover). |

When looking at MY25 changes, has there been any info related to radiator and oil cooler protection compared to previous 2 model years? My MY25 is in route to the dealer so if no official info out there, I should be able to check shortly.

You will not, however, be eligible to receive anything under the Program where there are service records, receipts, or invoices provided by GM, a GM-authorized dealer, or any other vehicle repair or servicing entity that explicitly state that a wheel repair or replacement was performed for reasons such as damage caused by impact damage or road hazard damage such as cracks, punctures, cuts, snags, and breaks resulting from pothole impact, curb impact, or from other objects, or words to the same effect." The number of catastrophic failures on the g87 or previous models with the same oil cooler setup is so small, there isn't anything to go after BMW for. And if there is an incident, it'll be from road hazards which is never covered.

I don't see how the tire could kick a rock on to the cooler since the cooler sits in front of the axle toward the front lip, closer to the front than the back half of the tire. So things coming off the tire would shoot pass it. Unless the wheel are turn 90 degrees, which the car can't do. Or maybe when you were going backward?

Sounds odd but was probably going around a turn/wheels turned. Can't think of any other way it could have happened. |
