How to drive fast in a manual car is the wrong-title for this video. It should just be 'how to drive a manual car.' The entire video can be broken down into; launching a car using different RPMs and staying in the power band by upshifting or downshifting depending on the circumstance.

I honestly thought he was going to talk more about principles of vision, getting braking done early before corner entry, importance of increasing contact front patch with trail braking, or positioning the car correctly. Instead, the dude goes on and on about traffic light races - essentially a low level skill.

If you want to learn how to drive fast, don't bother watching the video. If you want basics of manual transmission, it's worth a go

TBH, I do not get the fetish for double clutching. We have synchros now, double clutching isn't really a thing you need to to anymore. You have to insanely close to peak skill for the marginal downshift smoothness to matter. It's like, just about the least important thing you could want to master. It's not NOTHING, but it's so low on the list of skills.

*And I'm saying this as an old man, coming from cars old enough you DID need to double clutch. No synchros.

Squidget I’m guessing you never saw the movie The Fast and The Furious…..he was quoting that movie and not necessarily advocating double clutching 🤓

Definitely. Which is why I mentioned the 10 yr old learning how to enjoy a manual car. I wouldn't worry about driving a manual car fast.
That comes with practice not instruction.

I would bet on almost everybody in this thread never ever double clutching. Definitely not a thing I've done except on a reaaaally old manual car thats synchros were probably trash to begin with lol

I would be the first to admit I've never double clutched. I also don't do heel-toe-downshifts when on track or driving spiritedly as my car's auto blip is so good that I could never match it. Plus, I don't want to cause excessive wear and tear on the transmission for the sake of practice. It's a skill I practice here and there at slow speeds. But such is the beauty of modern manuals - it gives you all of the feels and the ease of use. I always nudge those on the fence between auto and MT to go manual. (Although I get auto has its place in performance)

I am old enough I had to learn to double clutch, I grew up on cars without synchros. Frankly, it kinda sucks. I am glad it is gone.

Agree that double-clutching and heel-toeing is something you CAN do if you want to, but you don't really have to anymore. Like you I do it for fun sometimes, but I'd never do it while limit driving.

You, me, and 99.9% of people besides Chris Harris and Misha Charoudin should keep it in auto rev match if tracking or trying to go fast. It’s just so perfect in every way, not just downshifting but also on the up shift. It’s crazy how the tiniest blip at the peak of your powerband puts you into the next gear so smoothly.

Sure, if you want to feel “alive” then turn it off, but I can assure anyone they won’t be as good at heel-toe as that auto rev match.

I’m really really really good at heel-toe and I can honestly say I’m still nowhere near as precise or accurate as that dang car. It knows exactly what RPM you need to be in measured against your speed on any shift.

I set one of my modes to be all the sportiest settings with auto-rev-match disabled. I can't rev match / heel toe as precisely as the software can and will probably enable it again. I do like that it can be easily disabled though vs the F87
