Hi all,
I took delivery of my new car (M240 - 2025) a few weeks ago and it came with a one liter engine oil container ( in a fancy bag) attached to the side of the trunk. The dealer told me the car will let me know when to top up the oil. This doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence to begin with, but jokes aside, do I need to add this at a specific mileage or should I just trust the idrive?
Next question is, if I use this oil in the future, should I continue carrying oil for top up in the future? I have had Audi before and never had to add oil in between oil changes.

In Canada the BMW dealers I have used have always done this in the 25 years we've bought new BMWs. I've only used any of it on a 2006 325i, otherwise the velcro bags have remained unopened until I've started doing my own oil changes on the cars.

I have a MY23 G42 M240 and I have had to add some oil between one of the changes.

On a side note, I had a B9 S5 and always had to add oil between changes (changes were done between 3,000 - 5,000 miles).

The system that informs you time to add oil is the same system that monitors the oil level and performs an oil level check when that is selected. If I didn't have confidence in this system I wouldn't have bought the car.

With a new car my SOP is to check the oil level often. Early on at the end of the last trip of the day. Or if on the highway at least every refueling stop. The car is level. The engine (at least in my case) up to temperature. The oil level check will not happen if the car is not level or if the engine is not up to temperature. I keep a small notepad in the console and I write the date, mileage, and oil level check results (OK/Max.

Oh, I also make it a point of checking the oil level when picking up the car after an oil/filter service.

Neither of my 230s ever showed any oil level change from maximum.
But my M2 was down a bit -- roughly 1/4 liter -- at around 400/500 miles. (Car not handy for me to walk out and look at the notebook.)

The oil level system didn't direct me to add oil and being old school I didn't want to drive on until the oil level got low enough to have the oil level system tell me how much oil to add so I added some oil, less than I thought was required (to avoid overfilling the engine with oil), and I brought the oil level up to OK/Max.

Since then -- now with over 10K miles on the engine -- the oil level has remained constantly full.

For my M2 (as has been my habit with cars as far back as I can remember) I carry at least a full bottle of the proper oil to have just in case I find the oil level low. I carry a bottle of spare oil but I have seldom had to use it. The M2 was the first car/engine in years, well since I got rid of my 2002 Boxster (in January 2018, with 317K miles on it) that needed a bit of oil between oil changes.

Still I would rather have proper oil handy and not need it than need it and not have it.
