Will a dealer factory order a No Option M2?

I am trying to order a SPY “no option” car with silver wheels, but the two dealers I spoke to (Riverside and Murrieta - I am in So Cal) wanted a $5K non-refundable deposit. I balked at that. But it makes me think dealers won’t order no option cars because of the lower profit margin.

I’m interested if anyone has had success ordering a stripper M2, and if so, where?

Although I’m in Canada, we’ve ordered several stripped cars from BMW here. The last 2 were a 2017 M240i with just metallic paint and our 2023 M2 with carbon fibre roof, metallic paint and black exhaust tips (besides the optional no-cost manual).

The dealer has never complained about the config or taken anything other than the standard deposit.

They don’t want to get stuck with a car they can’t sell if you back out. Porsche does the same thing if you order a horrible paint/interior color combo

So are they only requiring the non-refundable deposit for a no-option build?

Maybe you could submit an initial build with enough options for them to allow a refundable deposit, and make your changes at final submission before the car goes into production?

Sounds like YMMV. My final build was very minimal (+$2k in total options), however my initial build did include carbon package which I removed at final build confirmation. My dealer didn't require a deposit, and don't believe they would have even if my initial order was bare bones.

Why would you want a no option car, your then stuck with a moonroof. Carbon roof is the absolute minimum on this car, and shadow line lights / adaptive are only $900. This is not like older generation cars where ordering zero options was advantageous.

I get being on a budget. The question may be: loaded 240 or no option m2? I’ve lived this on every car purchase. Right now I’m $90k m3 or $75k m2 with $15k mod cash. (I’m going with option b)

This. There aren't even that many options on the M2 ...

I ordered from Crevier and it was a minimalist M2. The only option that cost money was the Aluminum Rhombicle trim. Also, Rusnack BMW in Thousand Oaks offered me the same deal as Crevier its just Crevier got the allocation before them.

Just don't deal with those asshats.

IMHO its the SPY combined with crappy dealers. they think that color wont move (probably have precedent based on G80/82 SPYs). i had 3 paid options on my car. carbon roof, heated steering wheel, and aluminum trim, plus BSM paint. there were no issues, questions, or raised eyebrows.

It’s the SPY, they don’t want to be stuck with that.

I guess I don’t see the problem, are you not truly ready to buy? Sounds like they’ll order you the car so get a price in writing and put the 5k down on it.

For what it's worth, I had to leave a $1500 deposit this time around. I've always left $500 previously.

My CA said it was because I added $9k in port options.

I pretty much only got carbon roof and led lights nothing else, they asked for 1k deposit.

There was a ZB no option car they were delivering that day so im sure that its possible.

So pay the deposit? What's the problem?

Interesting and worth contemplating - but Non-refundable deposits are illegal in CA

I'd rather keep the $5K in Vanguard - 1K is fine.

And its illegal in CA as I have subsequently found out. All deposits are refundable in CA.

I don't have respect for businesses that violate the law.

I'm ready to commit right now - but demanding a $5K (illegal) non-refundable deposit conjures up every negative stereotype about dealers and salespeople.

Furthermore, based on the results of this thread, a $5K nonrefundable deposit seems beyond the pale.

Thanks for your non-responsive response and contempt for how I want to build a car. Excuse me while I go do my daily self esteem affirmations because my feelings are now hurt.

You asked if a dealer would order you a stripper car, I believe two said they would and gave their conditions. It’s not illegal to ask for it, it’s illegal to not return it. I’m guessing they would do it, but are hoping you move on to another dealer because they really don’t want that car on their lot if you back out. Which, it sounds like you were going to do anyway before you made these two threads. Good luck, happy hunting. You are lucky to be in an area with a decent amount of dealer choices.

I had the same request on my individual build. Agreed to $2500 and that felt fair. $76k custom build with additional port options, and taking one of the few 2025 allocations, my dealer only had two…$5k felt high to me and too much risk in case a life change occurs in the next 4-6 months of waiting, but the $2500 seemed fair to both sides.

+1 its your money and your car. Shite advice is common around here when its not their money lol. Get what you want-- fk anyone telling you otherwise. Life's too short to not drive what you like. What YOU like.

I have a sunroof and an alcantara interior for my car in Germany. I also minimal ordered and my dealer gave me a discount in 2023. Dont care for leather anymore and a sunroof adds a fun dynamic to a nice sunny drive. I hope this works out for you and you enjoy the car.
