Break in service/tire wear

Just heard back from my dealer and watched the video from the tech. Cars gone 1,200 miles and rear tires are at 5/32. Anyone else seeing this kind of wear from the Michelin’s?

I’m not on Michelins but I won’t be surprised if my rear tires are down that much by 2,000km… too much fun being had.

Summer performance tire, they start at 8.
Assuming you are in temps +70, mostly highway driving?

Not crazy. But, I would see if they measured on a wear bar by measuring on your own. When you measure check the inside, mid, and outer. It may be a camber issue where an alignment can help you wear the tire more evenly.

My experience with the Pilot Sport family of tires has always been 5,000 - 7,000 miles of treadlife for rear tires, MAYBEEEE 10,000. They usually start at 7 or 8 32nds. Sure doesn't help 20" tires are $300-500 each now. I'm moving to Pilot All Seasons once the summer tires are gone.

I do not accept a new car without a full new alignment after is has arrived at the dealer. 2 for 2 on new BMW's - both needed alignment and both in the rear. The fronts were in spec, rear was out.

Ya that makes a lot of sense, but I can't see to many dealers selling at MSRP doing that for free. Of course I'd like to be wrong on that.

Back in June 2009 bought a new 2008 Cayman S. Didnt bother to test drive the car. My other car was a Boxster and I was quite familiar with that car and the Cayman was just a hard top version of the Boxster.

But I didn't drive the car very long before it was clear the alignment was out. Took it back a day or two later and on the alignment rack it went. In nearly no time the tech was busy adjusting the suspension.

After the car felt transformed.

With another car a used car (2003 Porsche Turbo with <10K miles on it and in pristine condition) got the car aligned just to be sure it was ok. Car felt solid after so it needed a bit of tweaking.

But the rear tires were gone in 8K miles!

By this time there was a Porsche dealer in the town where I lived and took the car there and had new rear tires fitted. And because the rear tires were severely worn on the inner edges I had the car aligned. The tech found the alignment was set rather aggressive on the rear toe in. He made it less aggressive. Assured me the car would still have the superb handling/road manners.

And sure enough it did. And the new rear tires lasted 20K miles.

Unless you are spinning the rear tires every take off I'd suspect alignment. And if you tell me the rear tires are not wearing evenly across the tread face but the wear is concentrated on the inner edges (less common is excessive outer edge wear) I'd guess alignment.

Added: Forgot to mention just got my car's break in service done Wednesday and at 1204 miles. Tire wear didn't even warrant a mention. My car came with the Michelin tires.

Michelin life

For PSSs I get 10-12k on rears and 15k on fronts on my F82, but I don't drift or burn rubber, either. This car only has a few more horsepower and should have more grip, so I'm hoping I get similar results.

Alignment is part of the break-in process, regardless. You should be at minimum, checking the alignment at the break-in service and/or 5,000 miles and/or the first year. Suspension components are inevitably going to shift around since they're meant to absorb and respond to ever imperfection on the road.

I do 2 alignments per year. When wheels are changed - winter wheels on align and same for summer. Always align before new car acceptance. Agreed on first few thousand kilometers of suspension settling!
