Has anyone noticed how much easier it is to have a smooth shift in "Efficiency" mode vs anything else? What programming is taking place to make the manual transmission so much jerkier by putting the engine into any other mode?

Hmm. There's no computer control over the clutch/gears/layshaft/etc, AFAIK. Nor, I think the CDV, which is a simple hydraulic fitting.

So maybe it's RPM management? The ECU is probably more sensitive to pulldown/pullup of RPMs when the clutch is biting. It's feathering the throttle to minimize shock. Just guessing.

I guess it's maybe also physically possible the e-diff is deciding to slip if it senses a big delta between the driveshaft RPMs and the rear wheels. But I don't know if e-diffs can actually slip to 0% on both rears at the same time.

Totally guessing TBH.

A more simple guess is that the engine is simply running with a lot less compression, boost, and thus is generating less torque. Jerkyness is proportional to torque.

The “throttle opening/closing” (in quotes because it doesn’t) is much more aggressive in Sport. So when you take your foot off the gas to shift, the throttle closes abruptly, which makes it buck. And when you engage the new gear and get on the throttle, it will open very quickly, making it jerk. Not a winning situation, but you can get used to it and learn the points of shift.

Sport+ is a different beast and I don’t understand it’s existence. Who would want a pedal you can’t modulate is beside me. Especially with a name like that, which the me implies it’s “sportier”, thus more suited for track… on track you want the opposite of this… maybe I’m misreading the idea they had. But call me when you figure it out

Here is my take driving my M3 on track.

Efficiency mode is not good because it creates artificial delayed power delivery and although it will help some manage there corner exit or shift more smoothly it can be really unsettling when the ecu reaches the point where it gives you all the power.

Sport I found strange, I think it's the best to get used to the car and power dilevery altrough a bit jumpy on the street ends up being pretty smooth on track. Probably the best mode to familiarise yourself with the car.

Sport + is what you want to adapt to on the track but I would never use it on the street cause it's much harder to modulate. On the track you will want all the power anyways without any delays so it's best to adapt yourself at being smooth in the mode that gives you the best response and the full beans.

Sport + is all I use on street. YMMV

Yes guys I came here just to take it all back, and saw your comments.
I was playing around with the modes today and I think I just needed to get used to Sport first.

Sport+ all the way. Plus, I did not know the exhaust had 3 levels. The highest volume and pops are in Sport+. A riot! Preset as M1 and M2. No going back
