Finally... F87 CS vs G87 driving compared back-to-back

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So today i got to drive both cars down my “private race course”, twice!

I can tell you the F87 CS is a awesome car. Huge fun to drive, very precise, fast and handles like it’s on rails.

But….

The G87 is just a bit better in every way, that is if you can ignore the exterior looks. That’s the last I’ll say about that because I like the way it looks.

Start with the important stuff!

ENGINE
G87 is a beast! The low end torque is frightening! My 45 mph/4th gear pulls made me think it wanted to take off and fly. And it pulls all the way thru the tach. Sounds great too!
F87 is incredible and once wound up it flies but the pulls from down below just don’t have the punch of the G87. But man it will fly too.

SUSPENSION
Again, G87 by a hair. Maybe it’s because it weighs so much but it is glued to the road. I just keep pushing harder and harder and it sticks. The CS feels lighter and maybe a bit more “tossable” but on the road, G87 is the winner. We will do a track comparison soon at VIR club day.

TRANSMISSION
Hard to say here as F87 is manual and excellent and G87 is automatic. Both are incredible and super fast. I have zero issue with either and have driven mostly manuals but have also had DCT’s and autos. Personal preference wins the day here. You make the call as to which trans you prefer.

INTERIOR
Again G87 noses ahead in comfort and quality. The seats(non bucket) are comfortable and leather is better quality then F87. Idrive 8 is a bit much. Car may be a case of “lesser is better” without all the tech. BUT, the ability to tune and change so much of different drive modes is awesome fun.

GENERAL FEEL
F87 CS is the best of its era, no doubt. I’ve owned all variants of M2 and CS is clearly special. The G87 just doesn’t feel as special and maybe it’s because I’ve already planned to get the future releases(C, CS, CSL, etc). And maybe this is a good thing. I wanted a hot daily that I’m not scared to drive wherever and that’s how the G87 is spending it’s time.

BOTTOMLINE
Can’t lose no matter what you get. F87’s in general are incredible car’s and like I said the CS is the cream of the crop. And the G87 is indeed the cutting edge of BMW performance. It may not be the fastest around the ‘Ring or at the drag strip but it’s the heir to a long line of BMW small performance cars.

I hope this helps! Any questions?

All the people that think BMW intentionally set out to build an objectively worse car

interesting about the low end thrust. 5-60mph data doesn't seem to support that. the f87 comp has the same time as the g80 comp xdrive.

zf8 is excellent? first time i've heard that. i thought it was terrible in the supra. 2000rpm manual downshift coming up to a stoplight while coasting and the thing lurches and slurs the gears together in a lazy way. of course if you just leave it drive and let it do the shifting it works better.

Shame the G87 was AT. All the controversy with the #TH4GC was over the MT.

I am not going off data, I am telling you how it “feels”. Data rarely tells the complete story.

Transmission is highly configurable and I’m sure I can make it clumsy. It shifts fast and accurate. I’d have a hard time comparing a G87 to a Supra. Toyota claims they do their own thing to their cars. Beside, mine are only my opinions worth very little to many folks out there. Mine is only a unscientific comparison between two cars i personally own and love for different reasons. My opinion is only worth what you paid for it….

Yes, but in talking to others with manual the Thrittle House thing doesn’t seem to hold water.

I have the CS and was gonna keep it forever until some idiot ran a stop sign and slammed into it. Car isn’t totaled and is being repaired but not sure I wanna keep it. So excited to know the G87 is a legitimate replacement as I have one on order. Thanks for the review!!

Thanks! That’s what’s most important especially since it was most likely a driver under the influence. He hit me and fled the scene in another vehicle, couldn’t get away fast enough.

Not to point out the elephant in the room, but this isn't really an objetive test of either car. There's no video or data to support anything. That's like someone making a thread that they just tested a G87 vs Mustang around a mysterious "personal" racetrack and their findings was that the Mustang was better. Then they post a pic of a Mustang being washed as some sort of evidence to provide validity to their "test". Personal preference for either car is of course fine, but again there was no objective test conducted.

Did I miss something, did anyone claim it was objective? I don't see any charts or numbers, was there an edit or something?

Based on the thread title I was expecting to see a review of cars going head to head.

Just for the record, I really wanted the F87 CS to be the way better car for all kinds of reasons. I mean it was $20k more expensive, limited production and a super cool story with all the carbon and stuff(no armrest!), but it’s just not the case, at least in my opinion. That’s the entire reason I drive both back to back, same roads, twice!

Far better than most YouTubers and forum randoms, who make comparisons based on drives and ownership experiences months or even years apart. He drove both cars hard back-to-back on the same road, twice. He owns both and therefore is less likely to be biased toward a particular model or be swayed by potentially inaccurate first impressions.

Besides, I doubt objective testing will favor the F87 CS, anyway.

Yep, you are 100% correct and think I mentioned it was my opinion as a owner of both cars. If you own a F87 of any kind, you are a lucky guy because it’s a awesome car(also said that). I’ll be keeping my F87 CS and likely longer then my G87 because it will go when something special comes along.

Don’t think I tried to hide the fact it’s all opinion and the picture of the washed car is nothing more then a picture of a beautiful blue car.

You are so right!

How cold was it?

Will you be breaking in the new Cup 2s first?

Know anyone with a manual G87 (apples to apples)?

The Cup 2’s have roughly 80 miles on them so not brand new.
Temps yesterday here in NC during my drives were between 75 and 80.
Road surface is good with 1/3 on new smooth tarmac and other 2/3 variables condition.

Don’t know of any manual G87’s in the area yet.
