exhaust button valve fully open?

Tried to search the forum first but did not find the answer so trying to ask current G87 owner for the question:

When you press the exhaust button near the gear shift, does it fully open the exhaust valve like you put the engine sound to Sport Plus in driving mode?

I know that when in Sport vs Sport Plus the valve on the exhaust open differently resulting in “half opened” exhaust vs “fully opened” exhaust. So I’m wondering if you just press the button on any mode, does it function equivalent to Sport Plus exhaust notes? Curious!

FYI user manual @ page 131 only said it will put the exhaust in a “sporty nature” lol.

Wow $600 for a module to open the flaps… that’s a lot for flap controls

I guess you can’t code that stuff because the DME controls it, so only a tune would right

Forgot the name of the company, but I paid around $200 for my previous G80. Will be re-installing on G87. Not sure if they are still available though. Got it from Mike. mike@x-ph.com

So I still don't know what that fuckin button really does. I've tried it, and I hear a change in sound, but I'm not sure if it's manipulating valves or just changing the piped in sound. To me, it should be a simple 1 and 0 button, valves open or valves closed, but I'm sure the Germans put a lot more engineering into than that.

Why not get someone to press the button while you are outside the car?

Ikr?!
It should be in a manual just freaking say the button put the exhaust on equivalent of what sport or sport+ mode sound and/or increase the pump in audio etc. and it literally just say:

Guys, the flaps only open in Sport and Sport+, not in Efficient.

Put the engine in Sport and push the button. You’ll hear the change in exhaust tone to a lower and louder tone.

The button does nothing in Efficient.

So is is operating the valves, changing the piped in sound, or both?

Good question. I haven’t been able to identify any piped sound in this car. If it does it’s pretty mild.

The actual exhaust changes. You can go out the car and check it out.

Thread being revived, but has anyone found a way to fully open the exhaust? Just heard my buddies 2023 G80 M3 with the Dahler kit and it sounds more aggressive which I liked.
Assuming our exhaust is the same on all the G8X platforms, this explains it pretty well.

I also found this other valve controller for much cheaper.

Man, I don't know about replacing the valve motors. Not comfortable with doing that.

Somebody commented on a DIY solution about a month ago -- where you can physically unmount the valve controller box(es), manually rotate to open, and re-mount in a way that they stay open all the time. I think he was from another model forum and I can't find it at the moment. If it were that simple I think I would prefer it to a valve controller or coding. Not sure if it has some negative side effect such as damaging the solenoid, etc.

It would be nice to keep the quieter mode available for trips.

If in Sport of Sport+ mode it closes the valves to make it quieter. Does nothing in Efficient mode.

And we learned later it does slightly change the piped sound in Efficient mode as well (even if the valves don't change). Many variables!

Newb question perhaps but after watching the install video above, is this just a sort of piggy-back module for controlling the valves to full open? It didn't look like any of the actual hardware was touched.

Also wondering if this would make any noticeable difference with the stock exhaust.

Yes, piggyback.

Valves seem to open more in Sport+. Still don’t open 100% without aftermarket interference.

I tested this earlier after reading this thread. The M exhaust sound button works in all three drive modes - either in Efficient/normal, Sport or Sport+ mode. I heard the difference, although notably less in the normal efficient mode - but still a change when engaged. It gets more pronounced in Sport and Sport+ mode - obviously the loudest/deepest increase resulted in Sport+.

Yes. Correct. That’s what you hear on the inside of the car.

On the outside, the exhaust flaps only open with the exhaust button ON in Sport/Sport+.

Wow, it is very convincing. Not that I do not believe you, but I am going to check this operation again outside the car.
