2023 BMW M2 vs Audi RS3 [Throttle House]

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Quote:
The 2023 BMW M2 ($76,500 starting in Canada, $62,200 in the US) and the 2023 Audi RS 3 ($60,900 starting in the US) are two powerful yet practical options out of Germany.

The tire-smoking M2 boasts a mighty 460 horsepower from a twin turbo inline-six, but it weighs a good chunk more than the all wheel drive RS 3. Will the Audi and its new RS torque splitter be able to outpace the new M2 around the track? What about in a drag race?

G87 M2 Vs RS3 by Throttle House

If it's from Throttle House, it's bound to be entertaining and controversial.

Once again, they like the ZF8 much better than the 6MT

I haven't driven the G87 or the current RS3 - however, as a G87 M2CS owner, I can totally understand why Thomas loves the F87 over both of these

Enjoy

As a VAG guy, I’d def buy a rs3 over the M2 if it came here in hatch. But it’s time for a change, I look forward to moving to M.

They try so hard to hate the M2. I wonder why? Eell, Im fine with it. I have a manual F87 CS, a auto G87 and slot for RS3 if/when they come.

Did they weigh the M2 with Thomas in it? No way it is 3,968 pounds with the carbon seats and roof as shown before the drag race.

It’s a better car objectively but less playful.

Less of a F87 and more of a G82 (for less money!)

Why is this so bad? And why don’t we want to hear what people think?

What’s the point if 100% of reviewers “loved” every new model that comes out (to suck up to the brands and get free flights and meals and loaner cars? Who would be left holding the bag in that case? Us, the buyers!!) Not to mention how boring that would be.

All of you that are buying this car - it’s an excellent decision. Don’t sweat a mixed review. Who cares.

The quoted weight they have for the M2 can't be right, right?!? That's what an M3CX weighs.

Everything that can be objectively measured is superior in the G87.

Easy to ignore all the other stuff that's pure opinion.

Throttle House Thomas,
When the F80/82 came out many didn't like the cars. It was BMWs first FI attempt on an M car; the throttle was spiky, and the chassis tuning wasn't as dialed in. When they later came out with the LCI/Competition versions BMW had reworked the powertrain and chassis tuning which completely changed the driving dynamics of the cars. That said, what would you like to see BMW M rework on the G87?

Faster than the RS3 and the Supra and the Camaro SS1LE and the F87 M2C. Hah. The initial reviewers really butchered the performance impressions on this car. Lol.

All of my BMWs were manual. A 2009 a 2011 and this 2023. I never had any issue extracting power. Its there just rev it out. Maybe someone can tell me what I'm missing???

It is a Jetta!! Never heard anyone nail it like that.

I have to say that I wouldn't consider the RS3. It's a very nice Jetta. I cross shopped the Mk8 Golf R against the G87, and chose the G87.

they definitely could have done more. you're right in that the manual was literally an afterthought and not gear correctly for this engine. The s55 didn't have as much of an issue because it was a quicker spool turbo with a broader powerband.

they could have at least updated software to offer flat foot shifts like porsche and GM. would really help the turbo stay spooled on the upshifts.

We all know looks are subjective, but mein gott the grill on the Audi is pretty ridiculous. So much want for black plastic, might have to start wrapping the grill around to the sides on the next design.

The manual is geared correctly for the engine and optional top speed for the car, perhaps better than in the S55 applications due to the relative lack of power in those applications near the redline.

At 285km/h it can only be driven in 6th and has passed the power peak, so lower gearing would not allow top speed to be reached. In the other gears the spacing is fairly even, allowing redline shifts to still leave the engine high up in the torque plateau for the next gear.

Besides adding a 7th gear, I don't think there is any gear or final drive ratio changes that would improve performance, assuming the electronically limited top speed is required to be 285km/h.

This is my 3rd manual M car (F80, F87C, G87) and I absolutely love it. The car is a huge step up from the F series and an absolute gem to drive with the 6 speed. The transmission is really enjoyable and the car is fast as all hell.
Here's my hot take:
1. The car is a rocket. It is significantly faster than a F87 when you get into power band. The thing is, the power bands are simply tuned differently in the two cars (one is for low/mid range while the other is mid/upper range).
2. The car handles much better than the F87 (front end grip is great, the back end grip is progressive). It's not like the F87 handled bad or anything, it's a great car that is super enjoyable to drive, pure even. It's just that the G87 simply has more grip and you can extract more out of it.
3. The overall quality of the car is higher.
4. It's priced like a Cayman but competes with the 911 (2 door coupe with 4 seats, 6 speed manual, small-ish, RWD, comes with carbon buckets, both have 6 cylinder turbo motors, both German, etc...)

Frankly, if you can drive one, drive one, the car is a 10/10.
