Zf 8 speed neutral
Is it possible with trans tuning software or bimmer code to switch the transmission to neutral when pulling both paddles, and into drive when pulling the + paddle ?
It’s a feature I liked in Ferraris and wondering if it could be adopted here. |

Those are dual clutch. M2 is a ZF8 slushbox. Is true neutral even possible in the ZF8?

I’m going to speak out of my butt a bit on this specific transmission and disagree with you, the torque converter does not provide the neutral selection of the transmission otherwise you could not rev it in neutral. Neutral is provided by disconnecting the input shaft from the output shaft by not selecting any gears.
Not exactly sure of the zf8 on input versus output shaft but it is not the torque converter that provides the neutral function.

NIC (Neutral Idle Control) is not a simple disengagement of the TC (Torque Converter), which we’d notice like depressing a clutch. It is a mechanism for reducing the converter residual torque.
We need to picture the gearbox rotational parts coming to a halt when we are stationary, (no output), with the engine still idling. This means in a conventional arrangement the TC has 100% slip, the source of any creep and drag losses. The idle control system is designed to reduce the engine idle torque through the TC, reduce the slip down to something like 10%. While stationary with the foot on the brake, one of the gearbox brake packs (‘B’ in any ZF 8-speed schematic) is released, the brake pack is designed for continuous duty in idle control mode. Some of the gear train therefore rotates, ‘idling’ without output drive. It is quite a simple solution, using parts already in the gearbox. As we ease off the foot brake and the brake pack engages again, (increasing TC slip) we will clearly feel the creep as if the whole operation is not working. If you try a quick release of the foot brake, you may notice you can get a split second where there appears no engagement, virtually no TC induced creep. |

If one wanted to rev their engine while they were rolling, in an MT, that’s easy - just push the clutch in and tap the gas.
Is that possible with a ZF8? Or does it have to be stopped, in park?

You really can't go from neutral to gear without using the brake? For park that makes sense, but not for neutral. I haven't driven a huge number of automatic torque converter transmissions but every single one I have driven has always let you go in and out of neutral.

My Jeep has a ZF8 and I can go from N to gear without touching the brake if the vehicle is already moving (anything above 1-2MPH).
On the M2 ZF8 you can put it in N while moving and rev, and to go back into gear a simple brush on the brakes (just need to turn on the brake light) will let you do it.

More like retarded. It's the same thinking that does not let you configure the Mmode in the M1 and M2 button.
To be able to drive this vehicle on track or nice road without stupid intervention is infuriating. Press Mmode button, press to put it on Track, press to confirm track, press the wheel again to get your main screen back. Hit M2, hit M2 again to confirm (since you likely have reduced or no traction control in M2). Only then can you drive. It is a sports car, but it is so hard to do sports car things with it.

Agreed. I've had several ZF8s, easilly the best tc transmission out. It's fast as hell and super reliable. Pushing 150k on my current ZF8 X5 with no issues and lots of abuse/towing.
