Coming From a Modded M235
Hey, all.
I've been really digging the G42 M240 lately. I am hoping some could offer some insight on my current dilemma. I currently have a 2016 M235i Xdrive with FBO and 30k miles (live in a major city and don't have a daily commute). Mods are your basic FBO for the N55: BM3 stage2, downpipe, charge pipe, catback, intercooler, and occasionally run E30. Suspension is stock with Adaptive suspension. I have wheels and better tires. I really enjoy the car. It's great at lower speeds, but I wish it had a little more up top, even with all the mods. All that being said, I am concerned going to a G42 M240 will be a bit of a bummer. My current car is paid off and I am worried that although the G42 is going to be more buttoned down overall, it's going to be slower and less aggressive than what I currently have. This normally wouldn't be a problem because I'd throw on downpipe + BM3 + IC pretty quick on the G42, and I am sure the car would feel better than my N55, but enough the justify actually changing cars? There's also the little problem that options to tune the new B58 are basically non-existent. I already went the JB route with my N55 and it's pointless compared to BM3 in my opinion. So that's kind of where I am. I can't test drive one because no one has them in stock. Tuning options don't exist right now (and may not any time soon) and I'd be jumping into a car that albeit is overall "better" is also slower. I've HEAVILY looked into an M4C to solve all of these problems, but as I would spec it we're looking at $100k..... That's a lot of money for a car I don't think looks that great and if a tuned B58 could get me 90% of that experience for 40% less that seems like a proposition I can't ignore. An optioned out M4C Xdrive is just way too close to prices of used 911 4S's and GTR's for my comfort. |

I'm not sure how much HP/TQ your 235 is pushing but I would think the two cars would be somewhat close. Close enough where you wouldn't notice much of a difference maybe? I mean there have been numerous 0-60 tests and the stock G42 has reached sub 4 second times. That's pretty fast for a ~$55k car.
Once you put the same mods into the M240, if available, it should become relatively faster unless the engine is already factory tuned closer to its limits. The HP differences between the two engines stock is around 60 or so. Eventually mods will come out, but right now it's a new platform. I personally would wait a year or two and maybe more aftermarket options will become available. It seems right now you would be jumping into a car with refreshed tech, but not much more performance. |

I would wait for the G87 M2. It's going to get you close to an M4, but at a much lower price tag.
It doesn't sound like you need to get a new car now. You only have 30k miles on your M235 Xdrive and have a lot of mods put into it. The G42 is a superior car over the F22, but in terms of performance I don't think you'll find the two of them being much different since you're FBO. The interior, tech, steering feel and overall refinement will be better with the G42, but I'm not sure if that's a reason to change cars. Availability of a G42 M240 XDrive is another factor. I believe there are two used M240's in the US with one of them being in Alaska. Buying new you'll have to get an allocation and there are options that are unavailable due to shortages. Two caveats: 1) You don't want X-Drive (The next M2 will not be available in XDrive) 2) If you can get a ridiculous price for your M235 in this crazy used car market I would take it and run.

I wouldn't be surprised if the G42 was able to do 450whp/500wtq with similar mods... but again, the mods just aren't there yet. I know the M4C is the easy answer here because I get superior performance to both the B58 and N55 with FBO and I get a full warranty to boot.... but $100k is hard to swallow and I fear depreciation is going to hit the G80/G82 hard once the automotive market normalizes. |

I still really enjoy my M235... I guess I am just getting excited to jump into something a little different after 5 years; but with the G42 there's definitely a chance I finally get it delivered (4 months from now) and realize it wasn't really worth it (my M235 is paid off FWIW, so I'd be taking on a payment for a car that isn't that different performance wise). Maybe I get a C6 Z06 as a second fun car and keep my M235 for now until I figure things out. I really want to see what a FBO G42 can do. I've been trying to get some seat time in a G80/G82 Comp Xdrive but that's almost impossible.... I have a feeling a test drive would seal the deal and I'd put in an order with haste. |

Can you link me to sources of these cars doing 450whp with JB and exhaust work? I haven't been able to find that. I think that would be the perfect sweet spot for me. FBO (Flash tune) G42 making 500whp and doing some suspension tweaks to help out the front end would be a Goldilocks situation I think. It gets me 90% of a G82 M4C for $30k less (the M4C I've priced out comes in around $95k). I'm sure they're doing their best, but I really wish BM3 could crack the ECU on this and get some reliable numbers going. And don't get me wrong... I am not saying the G82 M4C isn't worth it. I know it's an incredible car from a power standpoint. But I distinctly remember - While having my M235 FBO, I rented a 2018 M3C 6MT on Turo (because I was missing driving a manual and considering upgrading to the M3C) and I walked away from that experience thinking the M3 had an awesome front-end and chassis stability that the M235 simply cannot replicate. BUT, it was almost double the price and my FBO M235 brought me 85-90% of the same enjoyment. Particularly since I live in an area that is basically flat roads and highways, so most of the fun is had ripping between 0-80 or 40-100, etc... with some 90 degree angle turns here and there.
