Listen, yesterday I was carrying passengers in the rear bench seat and I thought I didn't hear the knocking. Today, on the other hand, I was carrying a long item which meant I had to fold down the rear backrests and I didn't hear the knocking (you could still feel the slight minimum "play") but clearly not this annoying knocking. The conclusion is that when the rear bench seat back was pressed down with the passenger or when it was folded down I didn't hear the knocking, so it seems that the noise may be coming from the upper backrest mount :O
This seems too easy a solution to the knocking mystery so I don't believe it |

I’ve also driven around with the seat backs down, noise is still there. Been dealing with it for over two years and tried everything short of replacing the strut. It’s been 100% clear that the strut is the issue for quite some time now. Replace the strut and noise is gone. All these other little hopeful fixes unfortunately end up not helping the issue. I’ve tried countless things over the years to no avail. |

Still waiting to hear back regarding my order. Have a couple feelers out, including direct contact with Bilstein support.
Meanwhile.. apparently KW 39020046’s should fit as well. Does anyone have any experience with these? |

I will add to here aswell since mine is a G20
This slight clunk and slight squeak noise from the rear has just recently started on my 23 M340i with 13,700 miles. Have M Adaptive suspension, Michelin PS4S. It happens at low speeds. Seems like this is the same noise discussed here. Theres not much talk of this in the 3 forum except one small thread but looks like you guys unofficially figured out the cause of the noise to be the adaptive suspension valves. I have been suffering from the same noise as the people here for several months. I requested repairs at a BMW service center in Korea, and after several days of checking, I found that there were traces of oil leakage in the rear damper on the passenger side. According to the center's regulations, it was decided that both rear dampers should be replaced, and both rear dampers were replaced today. It's not 100%, but the sound has been reduced to an almost imperceptible level. I hope it helps you that I replaced both sides with stock dampers and the sound disappeared.

I took mine to the dealer a while ago and mentioned the noise. They got back to me saying they couldn’t duplicate the issue, so I lived with it since. I took it back yesterday for an oil change and brought the noise up again. They offered to let me drive with their shop lead to point it out. One moderately bumpy road later and he fully acknowledged the noise. Fast forward to today, got a call from the shop saying that they swapped the right rear shock, test drove the car, and the noise is still there. They want to keep it another day to troubleshoot further. We’ll see what they come up with, but I’m prepared to just learn to live with it if required. It’s a little disappointing though for what I paid for it. They gave me a 430i as a loaner and it’s kinda nice not hearing the rattle from the rear.

I have tried to write and share my experiences in the past but have had problems making an account here..
But now I succeeded and I can share how it goes for me with this problem. I have a BMW M240i -2023 that from day one has had this problem. The car runs in Sweden where we have long winters and a lot of snow. The noise has been most evident when there is snow that is poorly ploughed on the road. I have also noticed an imbalance in the whole car when the car has been cold and before the damper has done any compression cycles. I have also been in contact with my dealer/service workshop early on and they have done troubleshooting and I have also had both dampers replaced to the variant with end number -02. At that replacement they also saw that the old dampers were leaking oil. I have also been in contact with another service workshop that has also done extensive investigations without finding the source of the fault... I have since almost given up on this problem but decided to at least send an email and tell BMW Sweden. They have then contacted the service workshops I have been to. Now a week ago, the first service workshop contacted me and announced that there has now been a Bulletin from BMW with exactly this problem description. The bulletin number is: R_NE SEL-SEL-P-33-20000994548681-02 - 2024-10-16 They have now booked me in for a shock absorber change in two weeks. Should it not solve the problem, it will be taken further. I feel cautiously optimistic about this and will announce the results. Last edited by BMW-M; 11-11-2024 at 02:58 PM.. Plenty of people have had their struts replaced, obviously meaning all bolts were torqued, and still have the noise. Or it was quiet for a bit and then the noise came back. I’ve been dealing with the noise for well over 2 years. Dealer won’t do anything to help and honestly as much as I absolutely love this car my patience with this noise and bmw is just about gone. Not sure what will happen but I’m looking at other cars. Beyond disappointed with bmw and their lack of care around this issue for over two years. Last edited by Rdurty2; 11-08-2024 at 01:58 PM.. |

I honestly feel the frustration here. It sucks to spend top dollar on a premium car that has defects that annoy you daily. Sucks even more that after sale support is often questionable, and in this case, largely ineffective.
There is certainly something wrong with the design of this strut. It is a design issue, but effects are varied. Largely explains why some folks experience it and others don’t. Unfortunately, many of us do. I didn’t post my supposed resolution to gloat (hell, I’m not even certain yet it will endure), but rather a case where perhaps it was rectified with repositioning in its mounts somehow. I really don’t know the answer, but if you don’t love the car anymore due to this being unresolved, no one could blame you from wanting to move on. Bottom line, BMW needs to give a better fuck these days. |
