Should I swap tires before the track?
Looking at doing the AMP Car Control Program and wondering if I should get new rear tires beforehand. Car has 14k miles on what I assume are the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's from the factory (I bought the car with 7k miles). Only past track time is six laps on the Nurburgring Nordschleife in a rented VW Golf R with no instruction.

I say "run them on the track until they die" then go buy new tires afterwards

You will know when the tyre is completely worn out, but not quite ready to fail when the steel belts become visible. The tread rubber will be worn through to the casing. This is the limit I reached on my last track day, the casing rubber is a different texture and colour than the tread:

Yes, they are AR-1s. Now worn out 3 sets of them on the Catreham. They are very close to the Hoosier radial slicks I used before the sizes I needed were discontinued, quite a bit better than RE-71Rs, but somewhat less than Pirelli DM slicks. Good feedback overall and predictable grip especially under braking with my very light car and no ABS.
In my case I need 13" tyres (185 or 195 wide fronts, 225 to 245 wide rears, using 185/60-13 and 235/45-13 at the moment), so the only tyres that currently fit are AR-1s and R888Rs, the AR-1s are a step up from the R888Rs. A lot of our club members run them on various Porsches, BMWs and Lotuses. Possibly the most used track day tyre in our club at the moment, although some with heavier cars are switching to the CR-S for a longer tyre life with almost the same grip. |
