G87 Reliability Poll

Some of us in the G87 forum are waiting for allocations or delivery. For current owners, how reliable has your G87 been?

The G87 will be my first new car but my 5th BMW. My F15 X5 is about to hit 150k miles without skipping a beat so I don’t question BMW’s reliability at all, just want to get a better idea of the G series.

If you select “other” (or any option really), feel free to elaborate in-thread. Disclosing mileage and transmission type would help too. Thanks!

edit: I accidentally voted "have had major mechanical issues" while scrolling, will work on getting vote removed

Have I believe about 5K miles on it without any issue. Break in service at 1200 went fine. No complaints so far.

1 minor issue that just happened today on my way back home. It could have been a big deal as it happened while driving but all is good.

The shift knob came loose (sliding off or up). I was able to secure it and it sems fine. If it doesn't happen again, I will mention next time I go to the dealer. If not, I will go just for that next time it happens.

Albator_IIII Oof that's one I've seen before. My manager pulled his F87 shift knob off once. I wonder if there's a better way to secure it in place.

On day one, I had the “Left Brake Lamp Malfunction.” Basically, the rear left brake light didn’t come on and my left blinker blinked really fast.

The dealer had to order a whole rear left light assembly. Came about a week later and fixed in a day.

Other than that (and since then), works great.

Interesting. This was an issue on some F87 LCI's but I believe it stemmed from the turn signal. Did they tell you the root cause?

Not sure. The skirt was still attached. It felt like the knob and some sort of "sleeve" could be moved up and back down. I could rotate the knob. I pushed it back on the "stick" and felt a secure lock counter clockwise. It feels fine now.

It first felt loose doing a spirited left turn. It could have ben really dangerous.

Albator_IIII I remember watching videos when I wanted to replace my shift knob, it seems this is by design. Crazy, I know. Take it easy at the gym https://youtube.com/shorts/9oxldniR0...4zpX6gnN8CbdnR

They didn’t say anything about the root cause. Here’s the paperwork, in case it’s helpful.

No rear M brake caliper covers and shipping blocks were still on the car post delivery.

Dang OP - that’s impressive. How would gauge your total cost of ownership? I didn’t know you could own a modern BMW without having a lot of costly repairs of some sort, post-warranty.

From everything I can tell the G8x is very reliable - especially the power plant and drivetrain. I never felt like the S55 was solid-enough for me to feel comfortable modding the car and owning long-term. So far, I think the S58 is rock-solid.

Since I got it in 2021: $2100 on tires/alignment (at the dealer ) and ~$1000 on fluids and filters since I change them at home. Other than that nothing has come up in the 70k miles I’ve added to it.

Getting ready to do my valve cover & plugs before trading it in but that will only run ~$400 since I’m doing it. Doing the work yourself after warranty really helps the cost. Oh, it also gets an Italian tune-up everyday.

Had my rear axle differential throw an error and my right front turn signal go out on me thus far.

Have had the car since Sep 2023. Less than 5,000 miles on it.

Been two weeks waiting on a front right headlight assembly thus far - cyber attack slowed everything down is what my dealership is saying. Hopefully get her back this week.

9,300 mi, auto, purchased Nov 28, 2023. Alignment was off/steering wheel not centered. Took it to not my normal dealer to get in under the 2k mi warranty period for alignment & they gave me hassle to get it fixed under warranty. Passed the 2k mi mark before I could get it to my regular dealer - haven't addressed it yet.

Other than that, zero issues. Has been a great car & if it stays this way I'll hand it down to my son in a few years as a graduation gift.

alignment issue from factory (fixed under warranty at RiS), early carplay dropping issues (seemingly fixed by OTA update), parking sensors don't like to activate unless i hit the button on the tunnel. otherwise none.

I do seem to have quiet a few issues with CarPlay failing to connect to my iPhone. Everything is up to date but maybe once a week I have to spend 5 minutes restarting the phone and ID8 until they finally sink up. Was frustrating this weekend as we were in a rush and needed the GPS.

It's annoying because it shouldn't require cellular at all. I just want to play my songs, that were downloaded to my phone, and I have to wait until my phone gets data.
I don’t think it is a problem in our garage as I never experience a signal drop when not connecting. Will verify it happens outside though.

I’ll go check when I take the dog out in a bit. Not that I have noticed though. Mine seems to only show the two for the front seat from recollection.
