G87 M2 Road Review Video - Can it be as good as the F87 M2?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

With our new project vehicle here it was time to get Imran@Evolve's opinion on BMW M's latest offering, and more importantly can it follow in the footsteps of the F87 M2, which became a cult classic very quickly in to its life with many including ourselves saying it was the true M3.

But this new M2 is bigger and heavier, and with that increase has I lost a little of that BMW M magic that made the F87 M2 so good?

Long live the F87…

Only time will tell, but currently it’s turning out to be a really nice m car

Maybe not something to directly compare to the almighty F87… But either way the G87 is on a much higher level in many many ways

Don’t need to watch the video to say NO. Strip the weight and all the useless tech and give us a 3500lbs< car with a manual and no fake engine noise

I love the fact that the F87 M2 was more fun to drive then the F80 M3 & the G87 M2 is more fun to drive then the G80 M3. That right there says a lot about the shorter wheelbase platform.

Agree but the F87 also had fake engine noise—at least the few I’d tried. Even the F87 felt too heavy to me—-this bulky trend isn’t going away

You don’t call 1430kg heavy. Including an OPF too.. remove that ugly muffler and the opf and you are under 1400kg. Thats actually great for the hp of the car , which was dyno at 484hp. Thats why its so much fun.

For one the new M2 is better looking. 2 it probably still understeers, but should be resolved with some ohlin, camber kits and wider tires up front. Brake issues I bet it has issues, and only 10K worth of brembo will resolve this. Aside from that it's a great car for the money.

Of course it understeers by default, because BMW isn't dumb. But not much, and with the new fancy 10-step traction control you can setup to rotate super easy. You can always improve turn-in more by modding it up, of course, if you are doing time attack.

There are no brake issues, the brakes are actually a high point of the G87. Precise, consistent, slow to fade.

These numbers don’t match any of the other M2 CSs that have been corner weighed on the F87 forums. It’s so far off that those scales are likely incorrectly calibrated. All others were in the mid-high 3400 to around 3500lbs.

Fine for a luxury/sports hybrid. But it’s no sports car that’s for sure

https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1794151

Another guy weighed his dct car on page 2 and it was 3580lbs ~1620kg

I know ! In fact BMW numbers are usually false. 1550kg is the weight for a manual CS . 75kg is added for a driver so i will not put add that onto the weight of the car. 25kg are the ccb. So 1525kg . I personally havent measured it yet , but Harrys garage posted each CS component weight in order to see if it makes sense , because they state the Competition weight which doesnt make sense. There could many reasons why BMW would have liked to hide the actual weight of the car , and one of those would be , how would the CSL G82 look in comparison , it should be the lightweight sport coupe from BMW . How would it sound if you say the M2 CS is 200kg/440lbs lighter than the “lightweight” . Also how would it sound if it had 300kg difference from the G87. Not right i guess. Yes the adaptive suspension weigh a bit more than the normal one , but thats not 100kg. Add the weight of each component and just see yourself. Simple as that.

I agree that those scale might not be calibrated correctly , but i wouldnt believe the weight is the same as the F87 Comp, because it simply doesnt make sense. They took 70kg/154lbs from the F90 , with a bonnet and ccb and those seats. The roof was there from before.

Ofc all these are assumptions , and thats because BMW gives us false numbers. Adding each component makes sense for Harrys Garage to be right. It also makes sense why BMW might wanted to hide it. Thats my thoughts.

The best thing would be to take both a Comp and a CS on the same scale to see their weight.

Great vid as per usual. But for my money, the M240i XDrive with a slight tune would be my choice as a daily in snow country.

g87 looks amazing and masculine, but the f87 compared with g87 looks old and kind of girlish, the only thing I don't like about g87 is the fake interior engine sound and gear-shifting effects, especially considering that in the UK g87 sounds like narcissistic wife choking with a sock.

Could also be a partly stripped interior and empty fuel tank, which would also account for the 55/45 front/rear weight distribution. The standard BMW weights are either DIN (90% fuel and base car config) or EU weights (DIN +75kg to allow for driver).

The BMW UK press release showed the standard M2CS DIN weight for the manual at 1550kg (https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...02261EN/441458), so the Harry's Garage 65kg weight savings and about 35kg of fuel weight reduction for an empty tank would require another 21kg of weight saving by, for example, removing the rear seat.

Yes, regulations and market forces are a b****. A new Lotus weighs over 3000 lbs. The only cars under 3000 lb are tiny or cheap (GR86, Miata). Or exotics full of carbon fiber and titanium.

Caymans start at, what, 3250, and only have 2 seats. Let's not even talk about the 911s.

If you want 4 seats, 400+ HP, and under $100K, 3500 to 3800 lb seems to be the new normal. The Mustang DH weighs even more than the G87. It is what it is.
