Completely agree. Aside from some drivers aides, leather and colour options the G87 is ridiculously close to the G82 and given the G42 is on CLAR it is the true entry level.

My take is... the M2 is the entry level car to get into an "M" car... fully recognized as an "M" series car... M2, M3, M5, M8, etc. It's the lowest priced "M" car you can get into. So saying "entry level" is not suppose to be really cheapen the model but it is the one you can get into.
For me, and I have one on order, I don't see an M240i as an entry "M" car. "M Performance" is not "M car." Love the B58. But it's not an S58. I love what they did because they decided to couple a B58 with X-Drive to make it a little BMW hot-rod of a car that they market as faster than the previous M2 but not at the price of an M2. As an non-M owner you gotta love a car that has near "entry M" performance and can say it. As an M owner, I guess it nips too close to an "M" car and irritating that BMW market's it as such and use "M Performance." Maybe BMW should have just used a generic "GT" branding when putting in the B58 in various models. Because that's pretty much was an "M Performance car is"... 240i, 340i, etc. I would be just as happy if they called it 240GT, 340GT. But to me the M240i is no "M." Calling it "M-lite" doesn't make it an "M." In the Scottsdale video, you have the M2 team calling the M2 an entry level car. They said they decided to go CAST (*corrected I said forged) wheels because they wanted to price it accordingly because the M2 is an entry level car. It's all their own decision but them not offering more colors or no plans for Competition or X-Drive because IMO they want to Cayman-ize the M2 and keep it where it is. It's not an insult but it's where they see and sell the car. Last edited by donm527; 03-20-2023 at 03:01 PM.. |

I assume anyone on these forums thinks of "M models" as what BMW's website calls "M High Performance models" (so, M2, M3, M4, etc.)
I'm not sure what ground anyone has to stand on when they say that M2 isn't the entry level M car. Seems like a fact to me since it is the cheapest? That doesn't mean that "cheaper = worse". Different people will want different things out of their car and there are definitely people who will choose the M2 over a higher priced model, even if they can afford the higher priced one. So, similarly, anyone calling M2 "entry level" as a way to throw shade at it is not someone whose opinion I care about. Re: "what is an M car?" ... it definitely doesn't help that models such as M240i are listed when you go to BMW Website -> Models -> M. Oh well. |

I think BMW will probably stick to their current stance of no Competition or CS. But who know if the very last year before going EV next gen they will surprise and end with a M2 CS with the full capabilities of the S-58 and X-Drive. They can't do it right now because they can't have the M2 faster than any of the other CS models in any metric but I can see them doing it the last year. But nothing wrong with the M2 right now if it's a great performer. |

But with the long development cycles, I bet BMW have already considered how to up the ante…just a matter of time…

The M cars are limited in production so there is no need for BMW to try and sell "as many as they can." They will probably have more orders than the number of cars they plan to make. The more realistic reason, and has been stated more than once, is that they first need to get at least the initial wave of the M2s produced and sold and then the can market and start on the more limited versions (Comp/CS). This process is not anything new, its just the more enthusiast driver/buyer ignores it and can be impatient (and maybe cause them to forget this is how they work). |

We’re basically saying the same thing? Comp/CS will come later, but focused on M2 currently as not a distraction for upcoming models. I do disagree that M cars are limited. Maybe in certain regions like California due to demand. But from experience and anecdotal evidence, you can grab one. It’s not like a GT3 or anything.

Lets not compare to Porsche (that seems to be a favorite thing to do, not necessarily by you but by many in here). Its not a Porsche and totally different beast. Yes, all M cars are limited (to a degree...I didn't mean to 500 or anything crazy like that). They certainly do not mass produce them like "non M or M Light" 2, 3 and 4 series. |

Either way, for those who want a M2, it’s going to be “gettable” and a hell of a deal at its current price point.
