Joe Achilles hasa video that sounds like what you asked for, almost word for word. 1M comparo, driven side by side, daily driver concerns discussed.

So new M2 vs old used car for a daily. Thats the debate? On safety considerations alone go new M2. The rest is subjective, enthusiast babble.

To be clear, I personally wouldn't compare the G87 to the 1M because 1Ms are pure unobtainium at a sane price. Also 12 years old, so no warranty. I was just answering a question that was asked.

Is there a performance review between a like spec'd. G87 and a G82? Does the "detuning" show up in real life?

I don't think we've got any rigorous real world comparos. The best I've seen is some dyno comparisons. And to my amateur eyes, it looks like both have the same peak torque and same low-to-mid power under curve.

The only real diff seems to be that the G82 has some more boost at 6000+ RPM, which is what gave it the higher peak HP.

Also, some reviewers say that their butt dynos couldn't detect difference between the M4 and M2, which would make sense if the extra power is tucked away right at the top of the rev band. But they weren't racing them side by side, they were comparing from memory.

Thought it was pretty well known that the detuning is just at the very end of the RPM range

A 4% power deficit at the top of the rev range in traction limited RWD cars is not something that can be "felt" on the street. You'd need to be racing (same day, same tires, similarly skilled drivers) to see if one car pulls on the other at speed, and by how much.

Anything else is "words for clicks".

From anything I can find out, the trap speeds on 1/4 mile for RWD G80/G82/G87 (non comp) are all within 1-2MPH (which is within the normal variation of track, temp, driver, etc).

If there is a detune, it is barely noticeable in the real world.

M2 Steptronic tested by Auto Bild, some figures:

- At Sachsenring, 1.43s faster than the M2CS, 0.79s slower than the M4 Competition G82 and 0.38s slower than the M4 GTS F82 (all with Cup2 tires).
- 1702 kg with carbon packet and no other options (the M4 Competition G82 was 1695kg with carbon ceramic brakes). F 53% / R 47% for both.
- 484hp and 579nm on the dyno (at the crank).
- 0-100 km/h 3,9s, 100-200 9.16s, 200-250 10s, quarter mile 11.91s.
- Verdict: "This new M2 is once again a driving machine! It may be 100 kilos heavier than the old one, but with the M4 engine and its chassis, it's clearly a step up in terms of driving dynamics. A few more horsepower, please, and it'll fit the bill!"

LOL, hey forum old-timers, remember all racist jerks a couple years back who slagged the G87 simply because it was built in Mexico? As if it was impossible to build a high quality car outside of Germany (even though BMW has been doing that for decades).

Ah, good times, good time. And of course, they were wrong, as we knew they would be.

Initially I had no idea where it was built, but when I saw an HEA model at the dealer, I was similarly impressed with the fit and finish of the car as the reviewer was. I was also happy with my previous 135is but could immediately see the improvements of BMW’s engineering over the past ten years. All cars are made globally now as well. I believe my window sticker says the engine and drivetrain was made in Germany. I posted previously about it that it motivated me to put my deposit down immediately. Maybe it’s not Porsche level, but they definitely closed the gap. Porsche needs to be looking over its shoulder.

From a quality perspective, I would rate the G87 as slightly better than our 2021 Macan S, especially the tightness of the shut lines. The Macan has better quality leather (we have the upgraded sports seats), but otherwise I’d pick the M2 interior. iDrive 8 is much better than PCM 5.0 which has been quite glitchy. Also, the console button layout on the Macan is an ergonomic disaster, with far too much looking down at speed to hit the right button.

Build quality far better in the Mexican M2 than in my German E90/E82.

Interestingly enough, the worst car I had was an American one (X3). So there’s that.

Then of course I can't do this performance car list without the M2.

I mean the M2, you guys complain it's too long, it's too big, you are wrong.

If you say that go drive it and drive any other car.

I would have it over an M4, it is that good.

I even drove one in Florida with an automatic transmission, it was magnificent.
