iPhone 3G charging?
Is anyone having problems with the iPhone 3G not charging when plugged in to the USB cable?
I've got a Canadian M3 with the Audiophile Sound Package and the Y-cable for my iPod.. I was using an old iPhone for the last month just fine for MP3 and Bluetooth but now I've upgraded to the 3G and it no longer charges. I still have Bluetooth and MP3 functionality, just no charge.. |

I have the same issue: a non-charging 3G iPhone. (My original iPhone worked perfectly). I've heard something about a new cable being offered by BMW but haven't been able to confirm it.
Is anyone aware of a solution to this problem?

I hate replying to my own message, but I just got an UNCONFIRMED update on the 3G iPhone charging issue.
I've been unable to find anyone in BMW who is aware of a solution (though they're all aware of the problem). A person at my dealer told me about a possible solution: the shape of the y-cable. Older iPod y-cables were slightly square, while the more recent cables are more round. It seems that the round cables have a pin change in the connector that -- possibly -- results in the 3G being able to be charged. I'm not with my car today but I'll check it soon and advise.

It's not the shape of the cable--the older iPhone cables put the power for charging on the "firewire" pins instead of the USB power pins. The original iPhone would charge from either but the 3G will only charge with the USB pins.

This seems like a good place for my question--
I am needing a new phone soon, either the 3G iPhone or a Blackberry curve are my choices. I have a regular phone right now that works perfectly, I am just finally needing to upgrade to something with web capabilities. I would like to go with the iPhone, but I am not sure how it will integrate with the iDrive... and I don't have a usb insert in my car either. What would you recommend?

As an iPhone 3G user, I'd say you're better off keeping it in your pocket and using a cheap USB key to store music. All digital transport 4tw.

If I'm not mistaken, there's going to be a new option for the MY09 E9X called smartphone integration. I think will will allow you to charge your phone, etc. I think this is slated for Oct production. From my understanding as well I think it's going to be an accessory that you can purchase after the fact.
Here's a cut and paste from my SA through military sales: All-new Optional Smartphone Integration A new Smartphone Integration (6NF) option will be available starting with October 2008 production. Once installed, the option charges the phone, allows access to music stored within the phone, and improves telephone reception by reducing radio wave interference. Smartphone Integration does not take away from the features of the iPod/USB Adapter; meaning that a customer will still have the USB and AUX inputs available. Smartphone Integration requires an accessory snap-in adapter to fully integrate the option into an X5, X6, 1, 3, and 6 Series. Snap-in adapters and phones compatible with this new option will be announced shortly. Last edited by pilot_bro2003; 08-30-2008 at 10:17 AM.. Reason: Additional information added |

That last sentence implies to me, that this should be something that can be purchased at a later time if you don't have this option from the factory. I hope this is so. |

This issue is not BMW's fault by any means. Apple made the new 3G phones rechargeable by iPhone charge cables ONLY. This means that the standard iPod cables WILL NOT WORK. I don't know why they did this, but they did. Oh, and you guessed it, BMW uses standard iPod cables with the iDrive system.

Hi all,
I have only just got my M3 e93 DTC Convertible last week and I also have a new although now 6 months old X5 and last night when put the ipod into the M3 from the X5 the options available under Aux for the ipod well there are a lot more option than I have in my X5. There is even Iphone. It lets me get into all the area's of the ipod, Video, setup, movies, music etc whereas the X5 only lets me see music, WTF's going on? Has there been an upgade to the Idrive beacuse the M3 has launch control etc because of DTC and or has BMW upgaded the iDrive for iPhone for Australia as the 3G iPhone is the first iPhone released in Australia. It seems like they have intergrated Ipod/iPhone to higher level or has this always been the case with 3 series verses X5 series?

This might be a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway - does the iPhone 3G synch up and work with the bluetooth setup in the car? My Nokia makes and receives calls but won't synch the address book. Does the address book work with the 3G?

3G iPhone works perfectly with the M3 on my end - phonebook transfer and all. I did notice a bit of echoing that seemed to disappear after the 2.1 update.
