Width of the rear fenders/arches

Hi guys,

So im moving to upgrade from a M340i to either a G80 M3 or the forthcoming G87 M2.

What I like design wise about the G80 M3 is the wide rear arches in comparison to the M4 ( I hate the front grill/snouts though!).

Anyway, my question is, does the new forthcoming G87 M2 have the same width rear arches as the new G80 M3 or is it more similar from the rear to the G82 M4 ???

Any help would be much appreciated guys!

The width of the M3 and M4 are the same so I assume you're asking about the shape of the fenders. Based on the prototypes and the leaked pic we've seen, it's safe the say that it wont be as soft as the M4 and likely not as aggressive as the M3. The M3 was forced to be that way since it's a 4 door and bmw didn't want to redesign a new rear door. The new M2's should be more of a boxcar style that is essentially a more aggressive version of the M240 which is already pretty aggressive. See pic below and you get a decent idea

The rear quarter panels of the G87 have a boxy design, somewhat similar to the E30 M3.

It's a little hard to see with the camo, but you can find pics with just the right angle and lighting, and you'll see their shape pretty good.

It'll have the exact same drivetrain transplanted directly from the G80/2, exact same wheel and tire size. Odds are pretty good it'll be just as wide as a G80/2, but even if it isn't it won't be that far off.

Thought it would be interesting to pull together some of the dimensions.

Here are the widths without mirrors:
G80/G82 M3/M4 = 74.3"
G20 M340 = 71.9"

F87 M2 = 73.0"
F22 M240 = 69.8"

E82 1M = 71.0"
E82 135 = 68.8"

G42 M240 = 72.4"
G87 M2 = 74.3"???

If the G87 is as wide as the G80/82, that means the M2 will be 1.9" wider than the G42 M240i, which is pretty significant, and 1.3" wider than the F87 M2.

The previous gen had a bigger difference between the M240 and M2, but that's b/c of how narrow the M240 was.

I also threw in the E82 generation to see how it would compare to the 1M, and if true, the G87 would be 3.3" wider than the 1M. Safe to say this thing is going to have a nice stance.

Wow. Yes it seems that it will definitely have a very nice stance indeed. I actually can’t believe that the M240i is wider than my M340i from the stats above.

I’m hoping that the M2 will feel like a budget 911!

Yeah man. I like the width of the 992 as well as the length. I hope it is no longer than 180".

992 width - 72.9 to 74.8
992 length- 177.9 to 178.5

The width is similar to the 992 then? Also, what’s the length of the new M2?

That is the unknown. Someone in another thread said a little more than the 240? So it should be 180" or a little more. October cant come fast enough.

To be honest, I think from the test mule pics, the rear arches look just as aggressive as the G80 M3 and so much more than the M4, but I guess that could be due to the shorter wheel base and smaller length of the car.

Wow! So overall, very similar proportions in dimensions to a 992 then?! Hmmm…interesting! I just hope the rear seats have much more space than in a 992 as we already tried that vehicle and the Mrs wasn’t impressed at all.

Funny…we looked at the Cayman and the 911. I liked the Cayman and wifey liked the 911. I was surprised as she isn't a car person but she liked the 911 more because of the space even though we don't have kids. BMW has been pretty good with rear seat space in their coupe so I do not think it would be a problem.

Of course it won’t really compare to the engagement of driving a rear mounted engined 992 but it is similar in proportions and does offer far more rear seat space and it is light enough to have fun in…..and at a much cheaper price too. Maybe the future completion or CS version will bring it closer to Porsche but it’s still a good proposition if you have kids regardless.
