If oil temps rise more than we realize, the 0W-40 oil would be an advantage.
I presume you are aware the gauge on the right side is the OIL temp gauge, not the coolant gauge? There is no way through the iDrive to check coolant temp, however it can be done easily through OBD.

Do I have to use Shell's 5W-30 or can I use any 5W-30 Synthetic?

Someone needs to do a virgin oil analysis on these to see how these Shell sourced oil stack up against some of the common oil for this car, i.e. Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge 0w40.

I wanted to buy a quart of this 0w40 to keep in the trunk but my local dealer only stocks the 5w30. Anyone have any tech on the differences it makes?

Should I order the 0w40 and insist that get used for the oil changes? In theory I agree higher viscosity is better for engines run hard but is there truly a difference here?

I don't think there's any definitive answer to that, by a long shot. I just bought 7 quarts for my in-between oil change. I doubt I will notice any change from the 5-30 the dealer put in. Just wanted the M-specific oil to try out. Also, I was gonna get shell euro-spec oil, but it isn't any cheaper than the BMW branded stuff, so I went with BMW. If it suddenly feels like I got a JB4 tune, I'll let everyone know.

Interesting.
I wonder if it has any advantage to Mobil 1 0W40 that's been used in BMW, MB, Porsche and Ferrari for years? It's also $25 for 5 quarts at Walmart.

If anything, your car may feel slightly slower with a heavier viscosity oil. In actuality though you likely won't feel any difference as the 5w30 and 0w40 are close enough to be imperceptible.

Anyone who's tracked their car have used oil analysis at this point? I'm particularly interested in whether the 5W30 shears down to a lower weight

I was thinking about the Blackstone analysis with my upcoming 10,000 mile service. I'll report back with results.

I put the Shell 0W-40 in my M4 over the weekend and drove 200+ miles into Maine the next day.

Car feels exactly the same as it did with 5W-30, but I'm happy to have the ///M specific oil in there now. I'll be requesting it from my SA when I go on for 10K service.

Anyone using Mobile 1 0W-40? It meets the same specifications as BMW oil (at least on the label). I am just curious as I approach my 5k mile mid service oil change. Thanks for any input.

Been using this in my 128 every 7.5k miles. Would not use anything else for my own oil changes after my experience running Mobil 1 in my E30 for 29 years. (Unless it doesn't meet spec for some reason).

Get a good quality (rare earth) magnetic drain plug! You'll thank yourself for not having shavings swimming around.

That being said, I think the M3 calls for 5W-40. 0W-40 might be on the approved list, but take a second look.

Checked the manual. 0W-40 is the official spec, with -30 as an option. My understanding is that BMW service techs are putting 5W-30 in our cars, at least in Europe on ED. What the heck?

EDIT:
Receipts say 0W-30. Phew. Must stop looking at other oil on the shelves!

So then I'd say its probably safe to run Mobile 1 0w-40 as it meets BMW's LL-01 requirement.

If it meets BMW LL-01 then you're good to go. Don't have access to a bottle right now to check the label. You should not worry about the quality of Mobil 1 vs BMW branded oil. It's excellent full synthetic (although make sure that's what you bought because they do make blended oil).

Mobil 1 0w-40 meets the BMW LL01 spec.

https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1

Mobil 1 0W-40 has the following builder approvals:
MB-Approval 229.3
MB-Approval 229.5
BMW LONGLIFE OIL 01
VW 502 00/505 00
PORSCHE A40

I usually get mine at walmart.
