Cracked windshield
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with replacement. Do I have to go to dealership for replacement or can I use Safelight or similar? Will this void warranty.

Dealerships tend to subcontract work like that.
In the UK, your insurance will direct you to a generic windscreen firm that will fit an OEM equivalent screen although you can often opt for genuine replacement at a premium cost. I’ve heard no negative reports about OEM equivalent screens but for the peace of mind, especially if you have a HUD, I’d go genuine. Screens are only around £500 to £600 fitted. |

Got a nice fat chip in the middle of mine at 6000 miles, right before taking a road trip. By the time I got back, 4000 miles later, it was a 6" crack, so I made an appt with Safelite three weeks ago. They filed the claim and eventually got approval for an OEM replacement. No actual progress, though, and they've been calling me about once a week to tell me they still don't have the glass

On my M240i I cracked a windshield. I wanted the dealer to replace it to ensure I had OEM glass. They fucked it up totally, left a space between the top of the glass and the roofline that was allowing air to blow inside. I brought the car back before I made it 2 miles down the road. They redid it with a new windshield and it was okay, but the amount of black adhesive and swirl marks all over my paint was unacceptable. Decided never to use a dealer for glass replacement again.
On my M2 I smashed the windshield on the highway as well. Gotta love NY roads. Anyway second time around I used safelite. Made sure they brought OEM glass. The first guy showed up and was able to do the install, but he couldn't program the sensors. A second guy came before he even left and took care of the programming. They did a perfect job. Would use safelite again. |
