Still hoping I prefer this in person. I saw an M240i on the road today (grey) and it looked a lot nicer than in pictures. But, I saw an M240i in person at Goodwood (purple) and really didn’t like it. Maybe it’s the colour or an ‘acceptance’ factor

I have the M240 in TNM, it looks great and people love it (get compliments all the time).

The E30 M3 was a sales flop in the U.S. The individuals that could afford them found them exceptionally “boy racer.” Many dealers had units sitting on lots years after production had ended. The M20 325is was better suited for daily driving as the S14 in the M3 had to be rev’ed high to get it moving quickly.

It is insane what a nice, low mileage E30 M3 brings today. It was a great investment 15-20 years ago. Today they have pretty much plateaued at $130-150k for a U.S. model.

Although there are some disconnects in the lines on the G87, at least it is not a boring design. A bit like the Z4M or clown shoe, breaking the mould to some degree of the preceding anodyne designs in the range.

It depends on whether you want conservative designs that blend in (F22/F87 in my opinion as an M240i owner fits that category), or something a bit more distinctive. I'd take our previous Z4M over the F22/F87 anytime from a design perspective and I feel the same over the G87. It doesn't have to be pretty to be an interesting design, I would take distinctive and disjointed over pretty and blends in, otherwise any number of anodyne designs that are currently out there to please the masses (including most BMWs) would suffice.

One ponders though who was this car then made for? Does this design really meet the M die hard fan? Or does this design really go for the masses who want something bold and say hey I’m driving a M car. I scratch my head.

The Masses

G87 forum does not represent the masses. The masses don't know this car exists. Coming from a manual e92 M3 I'm excited to enjoy another manual car over 400 horses with modern tech. All you need to know is the car is not for you. I wouldn't bring the masses into this...

I’m on my 6th BMW but only the 2nd full M-car, but I’m not interested in anything other than the G87 in the lineup at the moment. If I didn’t need 4 relatively usable seats in a relatively compact platform (the 2-seat track toy is covered by the Caterham) I would probably be looking at a Porsche with a manual transmission.

I’m sure there are both existing customers like me and others who are new to BMW who will be enticed by the overall offering and somewhat distinctive looks where the 2-series isn’t just trying to look like a shrunken version of the larger BMW Coupe offerings.

The X3 and 3-series in general are the BMW cars for the masses.

These figures are mind-blowing in both directions

104% increase in 4-series sales and 80% drop in X2 sales all the whole the rest of the "Larger" X-series have seen minimum of 50% increase in sales.

Here I am being told people hated the grille in the 4er including dominoM - also, everyone told me price of fuel would impact sales of larger SUVs - wrong on both accounts

wheels

We dont get to do BBS style wheels anymore. Due to the geometry of this car we have stick with angles no more curves lol!

Nah, I was just messing w/the hater w/the M4 in his "garage". I'm good with it.

But I agree the large X sales is still eye opening.

I do wonder if this is based on what is available by the manufacturer vs people custom ordering their cars.

This is just my thought, but in the height of car shortage last year, you couldn't be too picky about what you wanted because, well, you might not get it. So it was what was on the show room floor - if the manufacturer wanted to push cars with higher margins (which may be the bigger X vehicles, 4 series coupes) then they would prioritize those builds, allocate them to dealerships and sell them (particularly in a situation where you have a lot of demand for limited supply).

So, my guess is that the distribution of what people want may not actually be accurate - it may have been affected/fabricated by what the manufacture wanted to produce to make the most profit.

It also helps that there was a lot of money circulating in the economy from the stimulus and interest rates were lower. Easier to get into a more expensive car that way.

You're probably not. The car absolutely needs a wheel with straight lines and/or blocky elements.

I've never liked wheels that are not monoblock and don't like ones with giant polished lips either. Two piece wheels have too much going and, in most cases, distract ones eye from the cars styling instead of complimenting it.

I am not sure about that but I am sure, based on my tastes, that those rims above are not a good match (personally wouldn't like them on any car).

I have unofficially chosen Vossen CG205T in merlot with BG car. Final decision will be after seeing the rendering Vossen does.
