Let's talk about the G83!

Anyone else planning on getting the G83? I am. It will be my 3rd M3/4, but my first ever convertible. I can't wait.

I wanted to start a thread to discuss and share info. I'll start. Please add your thoughts/corrections.

Things we know (U.S. market)
- SOP July 2021 as a 2022 model
- Offered only as a Competition model with AWD & Auto

Things I would like to know
- When will BMW officially announce it?
- When does the order guide come out?
- How much will it weigh? My not very scientific estimate says 4,300 lbs. (3,830 + 130 for xDrive + 340 for the convertible)
- Price increase over coupe? Same as with the 440i, $5,500?

All guesses based on history
-may/June formal announcement (possibly July at SOP)
-April/may order guides
- weight penalty for vert specifically will be less than f8x gen (yay softop)
-price premium vs a comparable awd coupe model might be in that ball park but I think it's likely more options will be standard (like exec pack)

340 pounds is the difference between the 4 series coupe/convertible - I'm guessing that is where you got the 340 number from. Your 4300 pound weight estimate seems accurate but that isn't too far off my X3M (curb weight listed as 4620).

Yes, I got both my adders from the 4-series. 430i to 430ix for the AWD weight and M440i coupe to M440i convertible for the convertible weight.

Did you use US specs for the latter?

As far as I know, for right now, in the US, the M440i coupe is only available with AWD while the M440i convertible is only available with RWD. The remaining combinations are reported to be coming in July (MY2022).

Yes. I just re-did it. I used the 430i as my base for both, not the M440i.

430i 3,578
430ix 3,708
430i Vert 3,918

ix increase: 130
vert increase: 340

So the weight difference didn't change? That doesn't make any sense, but I guess we'll just assume something is up with the M440i weight numbers on bmwusa.com. It's irrelevant now since you've standardized on using the 430i as the benchmark.

It didn't because I was mistaken. I had used the 430i numbers for both the first time

With July SOP, figure that dealerships have allocations early June and order guides mid May.

However, I hope that parts for the MxDrive will not be effected with the global microprocessor chip shortage and now the Suez Canal disruption. We don't know if either 2nd or 3rd tier parts are sourced from Asia and used by the German tier 1 OEM part suppliers, such as raw materials.

Yeah, I was worried about that too. Supply chains were already stressed, then the cargo ship got stuck!

After seeing the announcement of the 2022 M xDrive versions, but still nothing about the convertible, I'm getting nervous. Someone reassure me the G83 is still scheduled to go into production in July.

Nobody? How about advice on how to tell the wife I need to spend another $40k so I can get a 911 convertible?

That would be a 340 pound increase over the sunroof "option", greater delta vs the CF roof.

Good point.

Hopefully this car is still coming out!

I hope so. I know it's supposed to. Big press release regarding the July start of the M xDrive, the 2022 M8 configurator is already up, but still mum on the G83. I hope it's not slipping to November or even later.

Anybody? The suspense is killing me!

I know BMW said "in time for summer", but until the official launch I won't relax. All the talk about part shortages make me nervous that the G83 SOP will slip.

Anybody hear anything? The awd comp and the M8 convertible have been confirmed for July SOP already.

My bet is that the g83 won't have an x-drive version. Seems like an odd paring and would be a lot of extra weight to an already heavy car. If it does end up having an x-drive version than I wish my budget was higher and I had more patience! Already into the g82...eh maybe next time

So instead of providing information to reduce the uncertainty, you've now cast doubt on one of the few items I thought weren't in doubt!
