There seems to be some confusion over this, as I’ve read that too but the video on iDrive 8.5 with BMWBLOG said it runs on a different hardware/chip.

Perhaps there is an update version for existing models but new models get a more integrated approach?

The last I looked BMW has not released any internal information pertaining to it. C&D is speculating.

ID9 ditches the controller and surrounding buttons.

It does. Beginning with July ‘23 production the G05 and G07 are scheduled to receive the updated HD.

iDrive 9 switches OS to Android Automotive (not to be confused with Android Auto), and I *think* the processor changes along with it and as such won't be compatible with iDrive 8.x. Look for all kinds of undesirable Google integration, and the lack of an iDrive controller will mean touching the screen for everything - which I predict will go over like a fart in an elevator with a LOT of customers. It will be interesting to see if they dare drop CarPlay, as GM and others have announced they're doing - the backlash on that would be brutal.

Agreed!

My buddy just got a new GTI with all the capacitive buttons and it's a steep learning curve for your fingers. Don't see why, outside of some manufacturing costs, that they drop physical buttons.

Be glad that you have a 2019 R, I had one and the interior was so simple to use and of great quality. I could operate all the steering wheel buttons by feel.

VW and Tesla, IMO have shown how hideous a pure capacitive cockpit can be. VW seems to be backing away due to backlash, at least.

I want no part of a pure capacitive cockpit. If that's what iD 9 is gonna be, I guess that's the end of the line, for me personally.

That looks pretty shit. I sure hope my car doesn't get it. I'm perfectly happy with the rotary dial and CarPlay.

Not that I know of, they usually roll out at the last week of the month.

Yeah and with the holiday this month, I would say look for the drop to be the week of May 22.

Nothing since the last week of April. I'm still checking every couple days. This wait just might kill me. Mostly because I have money burning a hole in my pocket and I want to spend it on something.

I have a beautiful bridge to sell...leads to some prime swampland. Can let it go a great price.

Were you first in line for allocations at your dealership? I see you're in WPB, so that would give me some hope being close to you....

I’m actually getting mine in Orlando. Put a deposit down last June for the 3rd spot. Once the car was announced they told me they merged lists with the other local dealer and that now I was essentially 7th. Was pissed off about that but thankfully they’ve gotten a lot of allocations so far.

Maybe the person in front of you in line passed on their April allocation and that's why you're getting it now?

I’m not sure. A month ago I asked and they already received 4 allocations. Either way I’ll take it.
