Self Tapping Screws

I am a little embarrassed to ask but I have never added exterior mods to a car before so I thought it would be better to ask than do something and get it wrong.

What self tapping screws should I use if I were wanting to add a front lip or side skirts to my car. Some companies say that they recommend using self tappers for additional security but they never say what size so I am a little lost.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

In my experience, good quality lips, skirts etc come with the screws. If not I would contact the mfr and ask them what size they recommend.

I used stainless steel screws. Drilled out the holes first so no paint / debris would be stuck between the skirts and rockers. Then sunk the screws.

I just bought a cheap 100 pc kit of 1/2 and 3/4 tappers off AMZ and screwed them right into and through lip and side skirts. I just spaced them out putting screws in spots that would likely have gaps and used about 10 on each piece.

I also did it all by hand with a stubby Philips head screwdriver and did not lift my HAS lowered car at all. It was tough and my hands got beat up and forearm was burnin!

Thank you and others for your replies. Is there a size that is too long? I saw at Home Depot 5/8” and thought that they wotbe short enough to no go through the front bumper. Just don’t want to get something too long and have it go through. No going back if that happens.

Self tapping screws will not hold properly in thin panels unless they go completely through the panel. Best to avoid using them on steel panels to avoid corrosion, but the plastic body panels such as the bumper would require them to go all the way through. I would also avoid zinc plated ones and use stainless steel, if possible.
