G87 M2 size & visual comparison vs G42 M240i -- side by side images from BMW

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This was posted on the @bmwgroupplantslp IG and shows the first pics I've seen of the two cars alongside each other. You can really see how much wider the M2 is compared to the M240i, especially in the overhead view.

M2 literally looks more aggressive as well. Glad to see a pic like this.

The G42 looks great with some aftermarket bits, imagine what the G87 is going to look like...

G42 looks much better imo (especially with a lip kit). It's still very aggressive with the M-mirrors, hood buldge, wide hips, etc., while not being a boxy mess. Plus the exterior and interior color options are better.

Unless you track often, must have a stick, or live for M-hype, I still do not see the value in the M2. I would go 6MT Supra for looks or Porsche for more true sports car performance at that $, but that'll get a lot of hate here haha.

Strongly disagree with the looks, I think the M2 looks way more aggressive and muscular. But admittedly that is subjective so you do you.

However between the 70hp boost, wider stance, much better seat options, adaptive suspension, M options and much better resale value for only a ~$12-14k price increase I don't see the argument for a lack of value. But I've also come to realize that I'll never be satisfied with the lower end model with an owners community of people who all try to get as close as they can to the "better" version without admitting they should have just bought one in the first place .

Good shots to appreciate shape differences. However, the filter ruins color perception.

Looks are subjective. Case in point; you think the Supra looks great, I think it's fugly.

As a current G42 M240 owner, I respectfully disagree that the G42 looks better than the G87. Especially after seeing them side by side and after you made the comment about getting a Supra for looks!

I mean kinda. But the angles don't do well for side by side comparisons. The car in the front is always going to look bigger if it's not directly overhead. These are all taken from a front angle. And then you're comparing the front of one to the rear of another.

Which Supra are we talking about here? The GR Supra that is overhated simply because it shares traits with Z4 M40i? Or the one that everyone won't keep quiet due to the 2JZ-GTE engine?

Having owned a Supra as a stopgap for the last 6 months (to get me from my old Afla Giulia QV to the G87), I can confirm you are both correct. On certain days I think it looks great...on other days, I think it's super fugly. Angles, angles, angles I guess.

PS, the B58 + 3400 pound curb weight = fun though regardless.

I like how much wider the G87 looks than the F87 but I'm a bit more on the fence than I'd like to be. If allocations don't go out at the end of the month, I'm not sure if I'll stay put or not.

You don’t see the value in a 6MT S58 coupe with G80 chassis and suspension for $62k base?

The Supra looks very aggressive, turns heads everywhere. A bit polarizing, but it has the dimensions of a sports car (and of course an incredible engine).

The BMW 2's aren't even close to as sporty looking (they have backseats even). Show a photo of the Supra and any 2 Series to your average Joe and they will pick the Supra 4/5. Show it to a gal and it will be 9/10. I've tested this extensively with friends and family to get additional opinions. Of course on a BMW forum more will like the BMW, but in the real world, it's just not as sporty by nature compared the the Supra, Z, Porsche, etc. with just 2 seats.

"Value" is a funny word to use here. If the G87 is anything like the F87, and I think it will be, it will maintain its value much better than the standard 2 series. When I was considering an m240i back in 2019, that made it a no-brainer to get an M2C instead.

M hype is people that argue on the internet about whether something is true M and such. They care so much about a letter it's laughable, buying nonsense non-performance appearance pieces to praise it even more. Only other car guys remotely care, and even that's a very small subset.

In reality the M240i is a 90s supercar levels and beats the OG M2 easily (and is even close to the M2C in a straight line).

The Zupra looks so much better that both. I just wish I didn't live where it snowed or I'd be looking at that (or a Z when the prices drop).

M2's hold value better than M240i's, this is not news.

You're also paying like $10K more initially to get a very small increase in performance for daily driving. As I said, if you track it often, absolutely require stick, and live where it doesn't snow/rain a lot, the M2 might be the move, but for most the 230i is fine, almost all the M240i, and a very few the M2. (anyone have the sales figures handy?)

Moreover, the MPG is like 1/3 worse in the M2, so you're likely paying a lot more in gas over the long run (but everything gets pissy when that's brought up).

Agreed, I buy what car I like. The M240i looks nicer by a long shot to me. It's just a bonus that 90% of people would agree with me. Get off this bubble sub and you'll see... check out the YouTube comments about the M2's appearance... they are rough to say the least.

I do not plant to buy the M2, looks hideous as noted, gets terrible mpg, and has much worse interior and exterior color options, rougher ride, etc. I was just hoping for some performance parts that could be transferred the the G42.

This thread was about appearances, and the M2 fanbois are out in full force defending this boxy Chinese design. Put it next to the M2C even and it's literally night and day.

I also think the M240i looks better. Just because the M is wider doesn't mean better. Something is off , it looks like a cheap body kit slapped on a 2 series. There is also no advantage getting this over base M4 other than slightly cheaper as they weight the same and the M4 looks way better IMO of course. Why get this over a G82?

(Ignoring the looks bit because I don't agree but it's subjective) They don't weight the same if specced the same. From what we can tell between carbon roof and lighter wheels you can strip 100lb off that the m4 already has factored in. Plus its shorter wheelbase will feel more nimble. Plus, the m4 grille is far more controversial than the M2 design.
