Rattling gear shift lever

Does anyone else have rattling coming from the manual shift lever under partial acceleration around 2500-3500rpm? Mine seems to make this rattling noise in gears 1, 3, and 5. Pressing on the shift lever or pressing on the shift boot seems to make it go away.

I’m very anxious about bringing it to the dealership since I expect them to scratch all the interior trim trying to diagnose and fix it…

no such issues on mine... removing the center stack trim isn't terribly difficult if you want to try it yourself with a pry tool and some patience

Nope, I do not experience this with my 6mt. There is an occasional chatter from the car when I let the clutch out in first with little throttle.

I’d get it checked out. I’ve never experienced that in my ownership of this car.

Quick trip to BMW maintence will do the trick. Good thing is it doesn’t sound terrible.

I found a video of the sound from another owner who seems to have the same rattle. https://m.youtube.com/shorts/MJ-Wc6b...oCCltTI5mbYmlp

There’s no issues with the function of the shifter (although it feels like a cheap toy compared to my 2 other manual cars), just this annoying sound. I would rather live with it than let the dealer rip my car around, rip up the interior, and then have the sound still be there. I’ve just heard too many stories of people having to leave their car at the dealer multiple times chasing rattles only to end up with the car worse than before.

My shifter is also rattling. Car is only 2 months old. 3500 miles. I am also hesitant
to bring this to a dealer and have them tear apart the interior and break who knows how many clips.

This is my first BMW and it already makes more noises than my 10 year old big turbo GTI. Ontop of that, the steering wheel isn't 100% straight, and the clutch pedal has some weird clicking in it. Pretty disappointing, I expected better spending this much on a car.

My clutch pedal also has a weird click on release. I started a thread about it a few weeks ago.

I'm going to have the dealer look at it Friday during break-in service.

I have the same anxiety regarding interior stuff and breaking clips / causing more rattles.

Sounds just like my rattle. I had a 6 hour drive today and it drove me absolutely insane. I would adjust the shift boot and it would go away, but then after shifting gears and shifting back into a rattling gear, it would come back.

I tried to pull up on the shift boot to unclip it like in this video https://youtu.be/z2z0561MbSk?si=Qt4VlJfBOQxK4u7F but I was unable to get a strong enough grip and couldn’t pull it off. Is the g87 shift boot not clipped in like the g80/82?

has anyone with this rattle found a solution? haven't taken the m2 out in a month so I haven't been able to do any further investigation.

My F87 would sometimes make a clicking noise on release also and same with my Mazda 3. I think some amount of noise is hard to avoid.

I switched out my shift knob with a new one and detaching the boot from the console is just a pull as per your linked video. Initially I thought it was not coming off and with it being a new car I was nervous, but I just gave it a little more pressure and it popped off.

Interestingly inside there was a whole lot of padding (sound proofing)? I did not have this in my F87, I wonder if there is an issue with some noise hence the addition of the material.

Finally took the car back out of storage after 2 months yesterday.

I was able to pull off the shift boot which revealed all the padding you mentioned. it was all bunched up in the front, so I tried pushing it around. The first 2 times I readjusted the padding, the rattle seemed to get even worse and rattled like crazy in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear.. The 3rd and final time, I tried to flatten the padding and pushed it downward and outward as much as I could. I have only heard a faint brief rattle once on a shift to 3rd (similar to what I hear on other cars. probably some synchro noise), although I've only driven it for 15 minutes since then.

I'll report back after some more driving, but not going to get my hopes up. This thick padding does make me think bmw had issues with rattles and just slapped in the padding as a bandaid.

I took pictures of the padding but I can't seem to upload photos from my phone. I'll post pictures later when I get to my computer.

unfortunately rattles are still there . Wacking the shifter downward does seem to make it go away for a bit though...

I don't think anything I've tried has had any effect. It's just intermittent and very annoying

Just started getting this rattle in first and third mostly. If I grab the shifter it goes away. Very annoying. Might have them look at it at the 1200 mile service coming up soon.

Just finished my 1200 mile service. Have had this rattle intermittent since day 1. I did not have the dealership check it out as it was not doing it when I took it in. Tempted to replace the shifter knob with a weighted one to see if that helps with the noise. This rattle is unacceptable.

No - no rattle at all. Hate rattles. Sorry you are dealing with this.

Rattle at +4000 RPM

Yup, I have the rattle as well, and am reluctant to take it into the dealer to troubleshoot ... at least not until I have another reason to take it in like an oil change in 7000 miles !!

Seems like there are enough of us having this issue so I'll stay tuned for a fix.

I have a similar rattling noise on throttle. I’ve found that my shift boot is rattling against the gear lever beneath it. If I futz the boot around it stops as it has to end up in a particular position to cause the rattle. Anywho, was hoping I could shed some light as some of you might have the same issue.

I have a weighted knob. Just started noticing a rattle this weekend. Driving me crazy. But suspect BMW will say it’s my fault for swapping the shift knob.

Update: I finally let the BMW dealer look into it because I had to bring it in for a tire puncture. Luckily when I brought it in the rattling was happening pretty consistently in 1st gear, so they were able to recreate it.

They said the rattling was from the tabs inside the shift knob itself rattling against the shift rod. They claim the design is flawed so ordering a new knob may not prevent it.

They wrapped the rod with some felt tape and the rattling is mostly gone. the persistent "flapping" rattle is now gone. I still hear a hint of buzz in first and 2nd gear sometimes, but I hear that in my other manual cars too.

I hope this helps everyone who is experiencing this rattle. It has restored my enjoyment in the car!

Better idea! Order a new knob and lever (assuming you mean the lever and not the linkage rod underneath):
