How is the driver assist on the G87?

Looking at getting a 2025 G87. I'm gonna be dailying this car and taking it on 300 mile road trips once a month. I'm gonna be optioning this car with Active Cruise Control.

I couldn't find any info on lane keep assist at all. I know this doesn't have the Driver Assistance Professional Package where it will drive itself in certain conditions, but does the G87 have a lane departure warning system? And does it push you back in your lane if you depart? I don't care that much but since I am going to be driving this car a lot I suppose it's nice if it has it.

Also for those who have Active Cruise Control, how would you rate it? I test drove a 230i at the dealer but unfortunately the car wasn't optioned with adaptive cruise control, only basic cruise control.

Great question - something I've never been able to test on test drives. Is it true lane centering or just an assist?

Based on what I've read, it seems like it doesn't have true lane centering, that's only with the driver assistance professional package. But I'm not 100% sure.

Can we get the 'driver assistance professional package' in the US? I thought the only thing I saw related as an option was the Active Cruise Control.

No, the professional package isn't offered on the 2 series.

Thank goodness. We hated that on the M340i we had.

I intend to upgrade to a CS when available so my car is heavily optioned, including active cruise, to maximize resale value at that time.

I seldom use it as most of my driving is city or relatively crowded highway so the active cruise is basically unnecessary and occasionally a PITA.

One peculiarity to know before ordering, when basic cruise control is activated, the “active” cruise is automatically functioning. You must defeat it every time or the “active” function will maintain the existing distance setting. You do this by depressing the increase or decrease distance button until your display indicates off.

There is no lane centering.

Good luck.

I'm not a big fan of the active cruise. I use it on my trips from Austin to Dallas & back on the weekends (250 mi one way). The route is basically 1 freeway the entire way. I do have to override it often though.

Even on the closest distance setting it leaves too much space between you & the vehicle in front. This allows other vehicles to cut in front causing you to slow down even more. It also applies the brakes/slows down much more forcefully than a driver would. Where you or I could simply let off the gas and the car slow naturally, it feels like it slams on the brakes.

The other annoying issues is if you're accelerating and want to change lanes, it'll slow as you approach the vehicle in front before you finish the lane change. I've also had it not recognize a vehicle cut half way into my lane & keep accelerating toward that vehicle.

No lane keep assist available - thank goodness. Either pay attention and actually drive the vehicle, or buy a Tesla, is my opinion.

Well we use the hell out of our Ascent’s Active Cruise and it works very well. Subaru was one of the first to the market with the driver assist stuff. I absolutely balked at first and then I learned how to use it, what it is and isn’t capable of, and it’s freakin’ great. I added it to my build hoping BMWs was at least as good as Subaru’s. That sucks if it isn’t as it’s a $500 option, that I was on the fence with to begin with.

Thanks for the insight. Does the lane departure warning do a great job? Is it "accurate"? Does it push you back into your lane or is it just an audible alert?

Thanks for that tip! How's the lane departure system?

Works great but the wheel (vibration) warning is much more subtle compared to our pair of M240i.
Took a little acclimation.

My experience with this is sometimes it jolts you to a lane you don’t really intend to go with, especially on intersections/off ramps. That sometimes scared the crap out of me. Otherwise it’s pretty sensitive to the side of the lane. For myself, I just wait till car is warm enough and change it to sport mode, so that this thing is deactivated.

But I got good news for you BokTroy: you don’t have to wait to turn the system to Sport. You can do that as soon as you turn the car on. Actually having the car in any temperature is irrelevant, it changes the gauges and turns off the lane keep assist, that’s it.
Thank you for your info and that’s really good to know, I’m still learning the car with thousands of config combinations. Well, will continue to learn once I get my rear bumper fixed up that is

No idea, I turned it off as soon as I picked up the vehicle.

There is an option “steering intervention” that can be toggled on or off if that’s what you mean.

With Steering Intervention the Lane Keep Assist will attempt to keep you in your lane but it has too much of a ping-pong behavior, it does not center just tries to keep you in the lane.

If you tend to wander your lane it is a helpful tool but it you are intentionally running the edge of a lane it will fight you.

Need to experiment and see what works for you. I find I can text much more accurately if the car is steering itself.

That's all I really need. Sometimes on very long drives I won't lie I do find myself veering over a lane when I'm tired but my current car intervenes to protect me.

When I initially setup my car at delivery I had the car setup so both the wheel vibrates and the steering intervention kicks in when you veer outside the line. I found the vibration helpful but I just ended up fighting the steering intervention as there are times when I would intentionally veer outside a lane to avoid a pothole or deep manhole cover. I turned that off and only rely on the steering wheel vibrator now.
