newbie question...how is the 330i pulling 45 extra hp over the 325?
I'm new to the BMW community and I just recently purchased a 325I. I really wanted a 330I because of the extra hp! Unfortunately I was on a budget restraint . After doing some research I noticed that the two have the exact same motor displacement and compression. Are the 330's tuned more aggressively than th 325?

Check out these thread, mainly it's probably the ECU and the intake that makes the difference.

The engines are the EXACT same... the part numbers are identical (11000404774).
In fact, both engines are clasified as the same (N52B30) by BMW. Checking the ETK, the only part differences between the two are the intake plenum. Most of the 45bhp difference comes from software changes. The N52B30 was designed in the 330i configuration and nutered to make the 325i configuration. I suspect Dinan and Jim C will have a field day with the 325... |

Yeah, sure they will.
That's why they have no replies when I ask them when something will be available for the 325. Also, the chart that coco posted doesn't list the different intake manifold for the 330, as well as the adjuster units for the variable intake: 330i Intake manifold : 11 61 7 522 927 Adjuster unit : 11 61 7 522 929 Adjuster unit : 11 61 7 522 928 325i Intake manifold : 11 61 7 542 757 (No adjuster units) It should also be noted that the manual transmission on the 325 is not rated for any more hp than 215. I have all 3 Dinan upgrades on my 323Ci and recently when I went for an oil change @ 83K miles, the mechanic noticed a very slight leak of transmission fluid in the driveshaft. He said its normal @ that mileage, but I'm still wary.... Last edited by RichReg; 09-04-2005 at 09:50 PM.. |

Hey don't forget the 330i has some kind of valve on the exhaust and the 325i doesn't. Not sure what it is or does, but I'm pretty sure it's for performance. (Sorry, don't know if you guys mentioned it yet...I'm not up on my car parts vocab.)

blueStreak- The BMW part numbers for a motor are absolutely identical. Therefor, the cams are the same on the 325/330. The intake is different, the exhaust is different and the software is different.
sharp1183- The exhaust valve exists to improve low end torque in BMW's stock exhaust system. Cutting it out of the 325 was a cost cutting measure. It does not produce too much of an effect as people who disabled the system on the E46 never felt much of a difference. |

So with these two engines being almost identical, does that mean that at some point BMW may drop the 325 and bring some form of a 335 to the US?
I have heard roumers of a 335 with close to 300 HP, but I have always dismissed them because BMW has never had more than 2 cars in each line up in the US. Maybe the will intruduce a more powerful 3 in a couple years. They are falling behind... Acura TL - 270HP Lexus IS - 306HP MB C class - 268HP 255 seems to be to low these days. the line up would look great like this... 330i 255HP & 220 ft lbs 335i 295HP & 250 ft lbs M3 410HP & 305 ft lbs what do you think? |

Oops, Guess I stuck my foot in my mouth with that coment! Duh!
I think what I was trying to say is that there has only been two 3 series cars for about 10 years. (Excluding M cars) When was the last year they sold the 318 in US? |
