Olympic Games

The Olympics start today and I would not be surprised if they end abruptly, Japan is at a high level of COVID infections and who knows what the rate of vaccinations are with the athletes and officials. I predict that the Games end about halfway through the schedule and they call it a day.

I spent seven months in Japan and am familiar with it, the protest outside the stadium got my attention.

I spent about 7 minutes -- running from one plane to another in the airport. So I know what i'm talking about.

Yep, highly unusual for Japanese to demonstrate like this, especially something as global as this with millions of people watching. I think it's around 80% of the general population that didn't want to have the Olympics (at least not this year).

Oh and I've spent a decade living there and travel there regularly so I do know what I'm talking about.

Now having said all of that, I really don't know what to expect with regards to how these Olympics will play out. I am personally disappointed that some key athletes are coming up positive. Then there are idiots that think it's a good idea to be taking drugs while they're in a country that is very strict about illegal substances. That's another subject however.

Gee, what a surprise. China complaining about their map displayed by NBC. It doesn't contain some territories in the disputed South China Sea. Oh, and Taiwan. LOL.

Maybe NBC can get John Cena to apologize.

The little 17yo snuck in from Alaska and won the 100m breast! She can't even properly train, the biggest pool is 25m.

I've never been to Japan, but I work for a Japanese owned company...and I used to love ninja movies when I was little....also, never got into the Olympics. As a Project Coordinator, I can tell you how frustrated I would be with what went into making this happen on a stage with no live spectators.

Let me get this straight, Simone Biles was not in a good place mentally so she withdrew from the team competition. Perhaps someone that has most knowledge can enlighten me.

I am amazed they are even happening at all. However, I think it would take a lot to get them shut down mid way through.

Japan has invested far too much money and time into this Olympics. Short of a massive COVID breakout, it's virtually inconceivable. It's a shame that Japan had to suffer such an unlucky circumstance as they have. They are going to lose billions from this as no fans could travel to Japan to be a spectator.

Ultimately I blame the greed and corruption of the IOC. Their requirements to host an Olympic games is outrageous. Compared to the past, hardly anyone wants to even put in a bid to host the games anymore simply because of the requirements by the IOC including having to build new facilities even though many countries have sufficient facilities in place. They're a bunch of greedy assholes.

It's a huge blow for them. I remember many years ago when Japan was selected. The level of excitement and enthusiasm was off the charts. Who would've guessed a pandemic would undermine everything? Such a shame. The people there are so friendly, hard working and accommodating only to be faced with empty venues and no foreigners that were expected to inject significant amounts of money into the local businesses. I really do feel sorry for them. They are proud people so they will not pout about it and will put on the very best show they can, regardless of the circumstances.

Regarding the US men's basketball team. I wonder whether they feel vindicated for their opening loss to France by walking over the powerhouse Iran <sarcasm>. I certainly hope not.
