Any Reason Not to Get Wireless Charging?

BIMMERPOST

Only $200 option… almost wonder why it's not just included. Doesn't everyone want wireless charging these days? Any reason not to get it?

If you've spent any time here, you'd know it was awful.

If it’s anything like my F 87 M2 it’s slow as molasses but I do use it occasionally

It's almost pointless. One of the few options I passed on. If it's the same wireless charging in my past m340i and G80 M3 it gets so hot and charging is comically slow.

Instead of paying $200 for that mediocre charger you can try one of these options. I personally just have the 12V USB adapter and cable, works great in my DD.
  • Buy a USB C inductive charger and plug it in your armrest. They range from $15-$40 for decent ones.
  • Buy a regular USB C to whatever phone you have cable and use it in your armrest.
  • Buy a 12V car accessory outlet to USB adapter and proper cable for your phone and plug in front of your accessory console, between the cup holders. Then just plug your phone in to charge. Can find both adapter and cable from Amazon, they don't cost much.
Note: In order for the last option to work you need a 12V adapter that is compatible with BMWs. I forget what the difference is, but some won't work in the front socket. Check the other forums like G42, G80 to see what they're using.

A lot of new builds are deleting the digital key, but if you add wireless charging you also get the digital key back. That's why I added it.

If one so desires the digital key, this would be the only reason to order it. Personally, I never use them.

Is that something only the dealer has access to? I don't see any mention of it on the configurator or under the wireless charging info.

It's only a real value if your battery is close to dying. All other occasions you'd wait until you get to your destination before charging.. Atm I have a short usb cable which works well enough for me (long cables annoy me and look messy). in Australia, it's included in the "standard" build so we don't really have the option to swap it out.

When I was configuring mine a few months ago it was in the configurator and confirmed by the dealer. It may have changed, though, if the chips are becoming more available.

Any way we can find out if this indeed is what will give us digital keys? I don't have it optioned, but I'll absolutely do so if I get the card. I hate having chunky keys in my pocket.

I had a car previously that had a credit-card style key that was flat and skinny with the four buttons on it and wondered why ever company didn't do that. Why does it need to be round and chunky?

It’s cheaper (used to be $500) because it used to be paired with Wi-Fi hotspot.

That’s now the e-SIM for $300. So there’s your answer.

but pointing out that "they made it cheaper" implying that it's worse? They didn't make it cheaper. They split the option up.

If it is at all improved I'm definitely getting it. I hate having usb cords hanging out on the center console and seats. So much easier and cleaner to just toss phone on the charger pad

I grant you that it is not improved over any other BMW model that is receiving the unit in the current production. Therefore, it still sucks!

When the cars went from iDrive 7 to iDrive 8 with the Curved Display the wireless charging was revised. The option code changed as well - from 6NW to 6NX. What that means for actual performance of the charger, I don't know, but it's hopefully better.

I do not see anything about the inclusion of the digital key anywhere. It is not mentioned in the Build Your Own tool or in the price guide. It would be listed if it were included. I would not count on having the option for digital key as of now.

edit: I found an online owner's manual that has a section for the digital key but it includes the caveat "BMW Digital Key availability and functionality depend on vehicle equipment and national market version.

I'm having trouble finding a definitive answer. I'll update if I find anything out.
