BMW Assist

Like another member of our forum recently, I locked my key in my trunk yesterday. Doh! Luckily I was able to contact my roommate right away, and he brought me my spare key. So I was only delayed about an hour.

But my question is now, can you call BMW Assist and have them unlock your car like you can with OnStar? Unfortunately I think not.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think you can actually lock your key in your trunk. Because if it detects the key in the trunk it won't lock.

As for your question, I would like to know too.

Hmmmm . . . . . maybe with Comfort Access? But my key was definitely locked in the trunk.

Definately not like Onstar. I had that until I moved to Hawaii and was told no service was available. I was thinking SAT should reach even here in HI. Anyway, the comfort access does not work like that and open your doors. I wish it would but BMW did not include that in the software. I miss my Onstar and XM. We don't get that either!

That's correct -- it's a feature of comfort access, and a good reason it's worth the extra $500.

You can call the 800 number if you can't get to the assist button but I'm not sure if they can unlock the car like OnStar.

All the intelligent keyless ignition systems won't allow you to lock your keys in the trunk. The sensors will detect that the remote is in the trunk and will open the trunk when you close it.

I don't think BMW assist can unlock your doors via sat.

Actually, Comfort Access does not allow you to lock yourself out.

Referring to the SAT unlock as with Onstar.

I've never seen remote unlock mentioned as a feature of BMW Assist. A substatial shortcoming in my opinion. My MB had it with TeleAid - which is the exact same service, even responded to by the same operators. Where is the suggestion box?

It would be a very nice feature especially for those that do not have comfort access.

I think you don't get the various SAT services in HI because most of the satellites are in geosynchronous orbits over the Gulf of Mexico, where they can "see" the contiguous states. That's why I've heard XM doesn't work in northern Canada either, though I got a signal in Whistler, BC.

I think Hawaii is too far "around" the planet to see the Gulf.

My psuedo-scientific two cents.

Makes sense. I guess that's why XM never called me back to reopen my account. Really sucks! Another thing that I miss about the mainland.! No Applebees, 24 hour Wal-mart, but the weather is great!
