it is sunny out. No matter how much I clean the car, there is this odd look to the hood, almost like a thin layer of vasoline but I can't rub it off. The dealer put a finish on the car - Auto Butler- that is supposed to make it look better, I'm questioning it now. Of course the dealer says there's nothing wrong with the finish. We looked at a black sapphire right next with no problem. I have Monaco Blue. I getting quite frustrated.

Wash it with DAWN dishwasher, then apply a wax cleaner, and then wax it.

Dishwashing soap won't harm the paint in any way, shape or form. What dishwashing soap WILL do, however, is strip away any wax that is protecting the paint, as well as any nasty crap that might be on there as well. Washing with Dawn or another high quality dish soap is always the first step to removing a bad detailing product and replacing it with something better. Be VERY careful that you do apply something else (zaino, caranuba wax, whatever your flavour of the month is) after you dawn the car, though, or else your paint will be very susceptible to damage, as it will have no protection whatsoever.

They probably used a really heavy glaze to hide any swirls or minor scratches inflicted by the terrible detail job that most dealer do as part of their pre-delivery inspection (PDI).

As the other members said, wash with dawn and use your choice of protectant. Some detailing boards argue that it can dry out plastic trim, but if you're only using it once, you'll be just fine. Just don't make it a habit to wash with DAWN or dishwashing liquid on a regular basis.

speaking of swirls, why on earth does the car have so many when I had it for 3 weeks and washed it only 4 times. It's unbelievable!

You must be washing it wrong

I have BMW's here that are many years old without any swirl marks

Have a look at auto detail forums for the proper techniques, such as using 2 buckets to wash

How do you post pics? I haven't done it yet. And by the way I've washed cars before I think I know how to wash a car. I think the Auto Butler finish is doing some weird things.

Thats definately a problem, but it not something I would think comes from the factory. They do a very strict inspection on all the cars paint

Do you have a professional auto detailer in your area ?

I think it would be worthit to have a professional detail the car

Sorry for the paint issues on the hood, but Monaco Blue in the sunlight looks S-W-E-E-T!! That side profile shot is awesome. I didn't realize it looked so good.

I have the exact same issue on my Monaco Blue. Fortunately it is only a couple spots on the passenger front quarter panel and not nearly as visible as yours. Let me know if you figure out how to remove it.

Ive found an imperfection in my paint.
Theres a tiny lil blotch i noticed after looking freakishly close to my Jet black paint. (I think thats something we bimmer fanatics only do)
It looks like a paint drop or something.

its very unoticeable so imm not to bothered by it.

I get residue that looks just like that after I put the BMW cover on the car. It washes off easily, but I'm frustrated that the cover that's supposed to keep the car looking good creates a mess. The cover must be treated with something.
