2022 M240i one year only model

Ever since I sold my 2016 435i ZHP (it's only been 5 months) I've been looking at getting another coupe. I've decided on an M240i.

It seems to me that the 2022s are a pretty special year. A similar dash and center console as our 2023 X3. I feel it is actually my favorite year as I love the dash, screen, shifter, center console, etc.

I'm wondering what owners of this model year think? Not one year later did they change to the curved display and deleted the shifter.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

You’ll not miss the shifter. I only use it to change direction. Merc have done away with for years.
The curved screen was selling point to me. Looking back at my 430 grand coupe, that dash looks very dated.

Looks like the 2025 model year might be a one year only model as well if the "true" LCI updates come in 2026.

I agree. Not only do I have a 2022 but I have a dial speedometer and a dial tachometer. I'm sure this is an even rarer model. That year you had a choice of the BMW digital display or dials.

It's funny that the new Ford Mustang now also has a large screen. However, you can opt for the screen to show digital graphic replicas of the dials used in the old fox body Mustangs. That choice must be very popular because in the latest model Ford has implemented even more digital graphic replica dial choices from older Mustang models.

Might be nice if BMW allowed customers to also select digital graphic dial replicas from past BMW Models. I mean, the display is digital. How hard could it be it create dial graphics.

I'm sure in my next M240, and I plan to get another, I will get used to the non-shifter that large screen, lack of buttons and the video game display. But that doesn't mean I will like it better.

That Sync 4 system in the S650 Mustang is so laggy, choppy and slow. The iDrive system is so much more responsive. Even the gauges lag in my nephew's Mustang GT.

I wasn't comparing the performance between the two systems. I was just mentioning that Ford lets the driver select digital dials whereas BMW does not. And that it would not be hard for BMW to add digital dials as a selection.

Speak for yourself, I use the shifter during every drive. It also makes for a good hand rest.

OP, The screen/shifter on the 2022's are indeed special. It's a big reason on why I've held my 2020 this long.

Absolutely. Not only did they remove the shifter and buttons but the little storage on the driver's side the 12v in the trunk and the climate controls in the rear.

Cut costs and raised the MSRP.

If I found similarly equipped 2022 and 2023 models, I also would have chosen the older one. Even after 4 months living with ID8 I still prefer the old system but it's not bad, I just prefer the old setup with physical buttons and more design integration.

If you do find yourself in an ID8 equipped car, you can retrofit the old shifter in it. I did that to mine.

Not mine. But this 2022 M240i has the dial gauges that look exactly like mine. The center between the gauges can be changed to show different info.

Use the paddles for shifting, keeps your hands on the wheel.
Resting your hand on the shifter is also bad practice for the same reason. Doing it in a manual will cause wear on the system.

I like my 22 also, we have buttons. No buttons or dials no dice. I won't buy a new car without them. However, I might be forced to in the future, kinda sucks.

I specifically looked for a 22 as I have a strong preference for ID7, physical buttons and more standard equipment ... for me the only advantage for ID 8 is the slightly larger screen for your camera views if you normally have to use reading glasses ...

Rear climate control was removed from the 2024, not the 2023 model.

Adding the driver side storage bin and trunk 12v are relatively easy projects, if you can stomach cutting a hole in your car

I have a 23 and the my main gripe is the climate system on the screen. Wish it was dials/buttons.

I've had my 2024 for a few weeks. Having the climate controls integrated into the screen has surprisingly been a non-issue. I figured I'd hate it but I got used to it pretty quickly. There's a always bar at the bottom of the screen for climate controls so it's not like I'm having to "hunt" through menus or anything.

I also see no reason to have a big shifter sticking up in the center console when it's really just a oversized button. Having driven manual for about 20 years, the idea of using the shift lever instead of paddles seems silly. I'm not sure what that's about...if people are pretending to drive manual or whatever but there's no practical reason to use it over the paddle shifters.

I waivered on a '22 back in 2022. There was a stock one coming to the dealer, but it was purple which I wasn't fully sold on, plus it was missing adaptive dampers and a few minor options I could live without. I thought I could do better on the price so I waited, but someone else jumped on it and missed out. I was too late to order a '22 and had to get a '23. I still somewhat regret it. I miss the traditional hooded gauge cluster, the shifter, and the physical buttons. I'm not sure how much of a deal breaker the passive dampers would have been, I should have test drove it.

I personally have a 2022, and I think it's the best generation of bmw interiors.

I currently have a loaner X1 with the new interior and the new iDrive with no shifter, and no physical buttons for HVAC and radio and I don't like it. It's certainly not a deal breaker, but it's definitely a downgrade and I can't wait to get my car back.

The new screen is nice, but the menus are not intuitive, and require way too many taps to get to what you need. The shifter is something I personally would miss. You may not NEED it, but it feels good, and being able to quickly put the transmission in sport by moving it to the left is nice.

Just in general, it feels like everything is so much more accessible in the old version and the new one just puts a lot of barriers in the way. Feels like form over function to me. They just want to make the car seem more "impressive" with the nicer screen, but ergonomically, I think it's a downgrade.

My pile of complaints aside, it's definitely not a deal breaker. The car will still be great either way, but if you can save some money AND get the better interior, I'd say that's a no-brainer.

I have a ‘22 and I absolutely love it. Perfect mix of modern screens implemented into the interior seamlessly… and buttons! Love the cluster gauge hood as well.

Never liked the the tacked on afterthought of modern big iPad dashboards. I had a ‘24 230 loaner with ID8 and didn’t care for it at all.
