Motortrend Super Hybrids

Saw this in the airport yesterday. Pains me! Glad I bought a V8 M3 while I could.

I'm 28. Just sad to watch the decline of the cars we grew up loving and the move toward an all electric future. Going to be interesting to see how magazines like Motortrend and shows like TopGear adapt. I wonder how the enthusiast community will fare. At some point cars like the M3 will not be allowed on the roadways, I just hope it's far enough off to where I can still enjoy my M.

I don't mind the NSX II or the Taycan. Heck isn't the super Porsche 918 a hybrid?

I guess the moral of the EV story is, if you want something that doesn't put you to sleep, you have to shall out big bux.

I think we'll be ok in the US for a while.

Happy to get a special permit and pay taxes to keep my ICE cars.

Hybrid performance powertrains however? Hell yes. RWD low displacement I6/V8/V10/V12 with 2 high output FWD electric motors? Happy to see the development there.

This. I would also like to see EV used for performance instead of economy reasons.

From a C02 perspective EVs don’t help when most of the electricity is generated by burning something. So focus on performance because you’re not really helping the environment.

I love the sound of a nice gas engine, but be as that may...EVs are the future and the truth is they will eventually run circles around gas engine cars. Hell, some already do. And with an individual electric engine at each wheel they are capable of amazing things that would never be possible with a single gas engine vehicle. Zero turning radius, precise traction control and vehicle stability control. Currently for about the same price as the M2C the Tesla 3 Performance is available and it is quicker.

EVs are the future, but they are still behind ICE when it comes to performance in my opinion. Pointless to compare stock vs stock times... bolt on M3s will beat a tesla 3p, you can't really do bolt ons to a tesla.

So a lot of car enthusiasts like a car that has some soul, moving parts, mechanics, sound....it's not just about going fast in a straight line....hell if it was then why are Teslas showing up at a drag strip a novelty.....boys are still building gas engines. I'm not saying it won't happen but it's like mechanical watches, sure my phone keeps better time than my Rolex but it just doesn't feel the same.

In order to tap into "hero mode" the Tesla driver has to precondition the batteries and do a bunch of stuff. And it's a one hit wonder. It's not like one just too in the pedal over and over again. AFAIK the Taycan is the only one that successfully repeat it's performance without going into limp mode.

Yes, this is where the top performance will lie for a while, until battery capacity gets a little better. The ability to capture braking energy and use it to sling/accelerate on the next straight is too much of an advantage to pass up and a petrol car just won't be able to complete with that, even if it's lighter, as it doesn't take that much battery space to do this.
